Great Things in Cartoons: Part Three

Character A (an animal) is pursued by Character B (a person in an authority or security position). In an attempt to evade capture, Character A disguises themselves (poorly) as a human being of the gender the pursuant is attracted to. Character B catches a glimpse of the now disguised Character A (who is evidently an animal dressed as a person) and immediately becomes besotted with them as a result of their new appearance. Character B abandons the pursuit to focus on attempting to woo Character A stopping only when an element of the disguise begins to fail (eg wig falls off). Despite the fact that Character A is now within arms reach of Character B, their astonishment and shame at having been attracted to an animal dressed as a person allows Character A to escape. We laugh as a result.

Was thinking the other day about what a sign of progress it will be when a cartoon character manages to evade capture by using this technique in a non-heteronormative way.

One of my favourite Scooby Doo moments (just after a long corridor shot with Scooby and Shaggy being chased in and out of (apparently linked) rooms) saw them hatch the great plan of dressing up as cordon bleu French chefs to fool the monster. They sat him down at a table and gave him a menu and it was only when one of their French moustaches fell off that the monster realised he’d been had and he started chasing them again.

Things that are undeniably funny about this scenario:

  1. The plan of dressing up as a chef being, in and of itself, enough to get the characters out of a scenario where they (presumably) fear for their lives.

  2. The fact that “a monster” would be distracted enough by the presence of two French chefs to abandon their pursuit

  3. The fact that the “chefs” would be the ones to distribute menus in this scenario as opposed to a member of waiting staff

  4. The smallest possible element of the disguise failing being enough to blow their cover

It’s making me laugh thinking about it tbh
