📺 How Good Was it Really?: Monty Python's Flying Circus 📺

Some changes:

  • I’ve split the league tables into 3: Comedy, Misc and Drama
  • I’ll do these threads on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Mon: Comedy, Wed: Misc and Fri: Drama

FAQ:
Q: Why?
A: Because it’s quite hard to rate Wallace and Gromit on the same scale as The Wire, and the league table was getting a bit unwieldy

Q: What constitutes a ‘misc’ programme?
A: One that doesn’t fit into a broad comedy or drama box. So far this includes shows like Big Brother, Wallace and Gromit and The Big Breakfast. It will include kids shows, magazine programmes, reality tv, game shows etc.

Q: Who are the leaders of each table so far?
A: I’m Alan Partridge, The Wrong Trousers and The Wire.

Q: Do you think you’re taking this too seriously?
A: No

Pretty groundbreaking, massively influential, consistently funny…

Marked it down a point because sometimes it doesn’t land.

Not seen masses of flying circus but monty python stuff generally completely does my head in. Really can’t stand it.

On of the few things my dad sat down and said “you need to watch this”. It was good.

Same, feel like it’s something I should love but it does my nut

Voted for Eric Idle cause he sang the One Foot In The Grave theme tune. That’s the only reason.

It feels incredibly smug for some reason

I’ve given it a 2 because smug stuff that thinks it’s awfully clever is still much, much better than little britain

The films I’ve seen (HG and TLOB) are quite good, watched some of Flying Circus and thought it was a bit shit. Like aggpass said, smug. Basically like watching a load of posh schoolboys play soggy biscuit with jokes.

I’d give it a 3 for sure

will you though?

The series is a mixed bag, the first two films (not counting And Now for Something…) are genius, the third one is pretty good. How does Life of Brian have a rating of less than 4 at the moment?

Palin is easily the best one of them

Was like The Beatles of tv when I was growing up - ubiquitous, revered and loved by people who didn’t bother with any other comedy. Surprised by the comments so far.

Funniest: John Cleese
Greatest bunch of lad: Michael Palin

Have only watched the TV series once or twice. Always surprises me how massive it is in other countries.

My Dad has always offered the Dad-hipster opinion that At Last the 1948 Show which preceded Monty Python was actually better. Think the Four Yorkshiremen sketch came from it
