Finally started watching this so giving a bump.

7 episodes in and it’s really good stuff, unsurprisingly. Slightly surprised by how episodic it is esp compared to the wire. Feels very this episode is about this thing and then move it to the background for the next one

it gets better at that

That episodic thing is one of the reasons why it’s not quite up there with The Wire for me, although I also respect the ability to do that immensely, particularly given how much TV seems to have abandoned it completely.

But there are a few episodes where the commitment to an episode being standalone lead (for me) to a less fulfilling overall show story.

Also if you’ve not been spoiled then be careful about Googling for cast stuff. Some character wiki info out there just opens with spoilers so that you can be hit from Google results.

Just re-watched for probably the 10th time. I’m a little sad that no TV program will ever be made that is as good.

Been watching it with my gf (first time), having watched it the first time around ten years ago when I was still a teenager, and can only remember a few major deaths and plot points.

A few minor issues and gripes so it’s not perfect but it’s so so so good. Maybe the best, especially when you consider it was the first to do so many things.

Strong in so many ways and could bang on and on about it but will just pick out:

  • how strong the ensemble cast of wider characters are (only thing I can think that compares is The Simpsons)
  • echo how funny it is
  • how good a document it is of Iraq War era America

Also a few stinkers aside I bloody love the soundtrack and how they use music. One of the ways it most feels like a Scorsese film in that regard.

One of the greatest montages/song choices:

That whole album (called The Dolphins) is excellent if you like that song (you probably already know this  )

Weirdly I haven’t bothered to investigate him further properly. No idea why, given that’s honestly one of my favourite songs. Will rectify

He wrote Everybody’s Talkin (made famous by Harry Nilsson). His version is on there too . He was mad about Dolphins and did loads of work to help conserve them apparantly

This is good

I appreciate that the intro is a chapter on its own on the DVD/bluray, makes it easy to skip
