well family as a concept like that is just like about the length of memories you have with people and the weird little moments you remember and grudges you hold or affections that are built on top of other things and how as a human it’s hard to untangle all of that. I think that’s why for people it’s a compelling way to put conflicts across. Obviously can be a cheap way to create depth too but the idea of how you navigate your feelings towards people you have known since childhood as things change can be interesting and relateable to a lot of people I guess.

  • I like the ending
  • I hate even the vaguest bit of ambiguity and everything must be wrapped up in a neat little package

Never seen it. Bought the DVD box set ages ago with plans to, but never got round to it. Still have the box set, but no way to play DVDs…

The ending’s really interesting.

I think it’s a brilliant solution to ā€œhow the hell do you end a programme like this?ā€ but as a dramatically satisfying conclusion to the story, I’m not convinced. It’s both a total cop-out and actively an anti-cop-out.

Schrodinger’s cop-out.

Not until they’re fully forgotten I suppose.

Gandolfini as Tony is the singlest best performance in the history of acting. Genuine belief, not even a #hottake

Can’t really argue with this tbh, tbf. I’ve never thought about it before.

probably the best I’ve seen in that it doesn’t feel like somebody playing a role to me

Watched the whole thing with my mum after getting the entire series on DVD for her one Christmas. I mostly have very fond memories of it as a result.

However, Employee of the Month is the occasion I discovered my toes could in fact curl backwards 90 degrees.

Like The Wire/other shows have amazing ensemble casts and having one great central performance (Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc) doesn’t inhernetly make a show better or more real or anything like that. All that said, I can’t h4elp but be drawn to how magnetic and huge and vital Tony is to the whole of the show - he expresses so much of the nature and philosophy of the show in just the way he breathes or blinks his eyes. Can’t get over it.

people voting who haven’t seen both…
