Also, was a big fan of the daft locations that ended up being used for recordings - like when they’d get bored of recording people on the rooftop of Television Centre and they’d send a crew out to, I dunno, Rhosilli beach or something to record the Manics*.

*I don’t think this exact scenario happened but you get the picture.

Ah yes, this was the ‘live by satellite’ section! I remember New Order on the Baywatch Beach and Simple Minds doing ‘She’s A River’ from the Eiffel Tower.

Does anyone listen to the Chart Music podcast? Music jounros (mostly ex-Melody Maker like Kulkarni, Price etc) pick a random episode of Top of the Pops and discuss it in insanely thorough detail. Some episodes are over 4 hours long! Couple I’ve got through have been pretty good though.
