How Good Was The Year (in music) - 1977?

HGWTY’s latest year in review made such an impression on Ash that they named their debut album after it, but now it’s time for you to tell us what you think of the music of 1977.

A reminder of the premise of the thread

After a number of days of posting and reminiscing, we’ll be rating the music of the year out of ten, based on the albums, singles, gigs, whatever that stand out for you that year, and voting for our favourite nominated albums and songs.

Everyone can nominate one album and one song from the year which will then be collated into side-polls two days before the thread closes - please make it clear when you post a nomination for the poll (as opposed to just posting clips or lists of songs and albums you like, which are very welcome).

1977 was the year the Atari VCS brought video games into people’s homes, Pele played his last match for Brazil, the guillotine was used for the final time as means of capital punishment in France, Elvis Presley died and Star Wars premiered in cinemas.

We said goodbye to Elvis, Groucho Marx, Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Crawford, Maria Callas and Marc Bolan, and hello to Kanye West, Shakira, Tom Hardy, Tom Brady, John Cena, Liv Tyler and Thierry Henry.

How good was the music?

You have until 31st October to nominate one album and one song which will then go into a poll along with a number rating poll for year overall out of 10, which will close a few days later.

album probably is not in the charts.

Song Nomination: Neil Young - Like a Hurricane

Just listen to the emotion in those solos. Love how that one begins sort of stuck on a couple notes and then when the chords change it just erupts and becomes so fluid and massive. Remember frequently falling asleep on road trips when I was little and waking up in the back seat to this blasting and being blown away every time.

Fuse of the times. Not much comes close to this in my opinion.

There are a lot of big albums from this year that I’ve not actually listened to so I was going to make my way through some of those before I nominated anything (could only see two or three albums I know I’ve heard front to back if I’m honest).

However, I’m going to nominate the first album I’ve listened to because that is Heart of the Congos and wow, this is absolutely dynamite! Always been a very casual enjoyer of reggae so I haven’t got a good knowledge of the classics but think I should fix that as this Lee “Scratch” Pretty production is fantastic. Maybe there will be other albums I find that I want to talk about but this one is an immediate 10/10 that stopped me in my tracks and is firmly atop of my (for now) very short personal list of albums of the year.

I’m going to be completely predictable - best album of this year (perhaps any year)

Nominate album Television - ‘Marquee Moon’

I’m probably being hasty with my song but it has to be punk

Nominate song The Saints - ‘Stranded’

Punk obviously the headline news, but was an absolutely incredible year for reggae and dub - Congos already been mentioned, but some other all time classics:

This is a gem from ‘77 I discovered not long ago when it was reissued.

Ffo soundtracks, ambient/drone/neo classical, even has a few folky elements I guess.

Reminds me of the soundtrack to The Deer Hunter - fairly gentle but with a haunting atmosphere and some quite dissonant sounds beneath the surface.

Great year. I turned 1 in 1977. Memory’s a bit fuzzy, but I know I didn’t discover the good stuff till later.
