Punk obviously the headline news, but was an absolutely incredible year for reggae and dub - Congos already been mentioned, but some other all time classics:
This is a gem from ‘77 I discovered not long ago when it was reissued.
Ffo soundtracks, ambient/drone/neo classical, even has a few folky elements I guess.
Reminds me of the soundtrack to The Deer Hunter - fairly gentle but with a haunting atmosphere and some quite dissonant sounds beneath the surface.
Great year. I turned 1 in 1977. Memory’s a bit fuzzy, but I know I didn’t discover the good stuff till later.
I didn’t know this song until the Music League disco round a few months back, and this was the first one on the playlist. Really good. In fact that ML round kicked off a lot of disco listening for me over the summer and I discovered some really great stuff that made summer pretty nice. I wanted to share some of these tracks and extend discussion beyond that ML round, so I dug up some existing disco threads including THIS ONE you started the year before…and I’ve had a browser tab open with it since probably August with the intention of reviving it. Somehow still haven’t. Just thought it was funny when you posted this here I thought I was looking at that thread, since the same video is in the first post.
Of all the good disco I discovered this year, I’m curious which tracks were released in 77.
Is this a nomination? Because if not…
that music league week was genuinely great
Yeah I think it is!
For album or song or both?
Album please!
Album nomination
Brian Eno - Before & After Science
I like the wonky art rock on side one but I adore side two as it let’s some air in, slows and grows more gentle. He’s had a few of them but I think By This River is Eno’s most gorgeous moment. God it’s sad, but so peaceful too.
I used to like Pink Floyd’s Animals a lot more than I did today. Hadn’t listened since 2014. Still a good album, just not as much into it. Same goes for a lot of other 1977 prog albums on my list, that I’m sure I won’t revisit as part of this. Might do a couple, but might rather explore some highly-rated albums I’ve never heard instead.
i really want to hate this album but its impossible
Agree. It’s the antithesis of everything I like musically, yet it is nigh on perfect.
