How Good Was The Year (in music) - 1988?

Last time round, 2006 scored 7.28 to land at 29th in the HGWTY table. We’re turning the dial back a further 18 years now to consider the music of 1988.

A reminder of the premise of the thread

After a number of days of posting and reminiscing, we’ll be rating the music of the year out of ten, based on the albums, singles, gigs, whatever that stand out for you that year, and voting for our favourite nominated albums and songs.

Everyone can nominate one album and one song from the year which will then be collated into side-polls two days before the thread closes - please make it clear when you post a nomination for the poll (as opposed to just posting clips or lists of songs and albums you like, which are very welcome).

We said goodbye to Roy Orbison, Nico, Enzo Ferrari, Chet Baker, Kenneth Williams and Raymond Carver, and hello to Rihanna, Adele, Emma Stone, Conor McGregor, Sergio Aguero, Robert Lewandowski, Lizzo and Tyson Fury.

But how good was the music?

You have roughly one week to nominate one album and one song which will then go into a poll along with a number rating poll for year overall out of 10, which will close a few days later.

Tough decision saved for me by @JackLiquorice already nominating my other contender. So…

Nominate album: Pet Shop Boys - Introspective

Third album in as many years for PSB, and has some of their very best moments. The extended length of the tracks gave them space to go further and deeper than before.

Got this on cassette for Christmas that year, and it barely left my Walkman* for months. If I’d written Left To My Own Devices or Domino Dancing I think I could die happy.

Another big year for me. I know that there are other people on the forum who rate ‘California’ by American Music Club as much as I do (and will hopefully nominate it) so on that basis I’ll go…

Easy one for me

Nominate album - Dinosaur Jr - bug

And for the track, got to be one of the best one track wonders, written by a bunch of 15/16 yr old Australian kids.

Nominate track - God - My Pal

And just to tie the two together.

Memories! 13/14 year-old me had all of these as 7" singles and Big Fun, in particular, was the gateway to Detroit techno.

Nominate song: Inner City - Big Fun

My favourite track from Introspective. It’s such an underrated, morose PSB track, transformed by Frankie Knuckles’ production and Josh Milan’s piano solo. It blew me away then and still does now.
