You’ve just made my album choice much easier, cheers
With QOTSA and Glassjaw already nominated…
Nominate album: The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Hörse Of The Dög
There’s a couple of other albums I felt strongly for nominating, one was Alice by Tom Waits which I think I’d put up there with his best albums, pretty good going when it came so deep in his career. He can still mix it up, like the stomper where he bellows in fake German, but it’s more weighted toward weepers than creepers and I love its foggy, deep Autumn mustiness. It’s got a beautiful opener
The other was Out Of Season by Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man which I came to years later and more through the Talk Talk connection than Portishead but I love Beth in this setting, it’s a luxurious sounding record
Album nomination:
…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes
I’ve revisited a few top 10s today and with Geogaddi picked off early, it’s gonna be Trail of Dead for me. In the past I’ve avoided having this in the 2nd spot for the dumbest reason – the cover is dominantly red & orange just like BoC’s and I just couldn’t stand the way it looked. But I can’t deny this is one of the strongest albums of the year, better than the other contenders on my list, and also more important.
Hate to call this out but since we have quite a few in common I wondered why some of them weren’t showing up on my list. The Postal Service’s Give Up was released in 2003, and The Casket Lottery’s Survival Is for Cowards released in 2001. Both great though. The latter did release this great split/collab EP with Small Brown Bike in 2002. This song remains a favorite from either artist to this day:
Shout
Absolutely refuse to believe this was twenty-one years ago.
Good call on the Postal Service, totally thought I had removed that and squeezed in Ms John Soda, probably would have mentioned it otherwise, it’s a good thing as I think 2003 wasn’t so strong and it sits proudly in the top 5 there. Seems to be some internet indecision on The Casket Lottery, Wikipedia (obviosuly always to be trusted
has it as 2002 as do others, but I see discogs has it as 2001, but who knows, my memory isn’t strong enough to remember back then, maybe a country release thing? Great stuff either way.
Nominating an album isn’t going to be easy, a few obvious choice already taken.
A few more 2002 highlights
Nominate Album: Biffy Clyro - Blackened Sky.
Would never even consider myself a fan of them nowadays, but this album was certainly a gateway drug for me in 2002 (probably 03 by the time I got to it tbh) and I absolutely made pals and started bands off the back of this record so have to give it a nod. Blew my tiny mind at the time as it the two follow-ups. The B-sides were dead good too.
Nominate album The Mendoza Line - Lost in Revelry
Nominate song Broken Social Scene - Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl
I technically didn’t discover this until early 2003 when we visited Toronto and they were playing the BSS album every where we went.
Oh bless you, think this would have been my pick too, the best
The Notwist and Wilco albums are up their with my absolute favourites. And of the other mentioneds, I also really liked Sigur Ros, Broken Social Scene, The Delgados, The Flaming Lips, Fog, Múm, Bright Eyes.
Other albums:
David & The Citizens - For All Happy Endings
The Frank & Walters - Beauty Becomes More Than Life
Gemma Hayes - Night On My Side
Jeffrey Lewis - The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane
Lambchop - Is A Woman
Obi - The Magic Lantern
The Promise Ring - Wood/Water
St Thomas - I’m Coming Home
Stephen Jones - Almost Cured Of Sadness
Stephen Jones - Plastic Tablets
I think my favourite of the ones not nominated yet would be out of Broken Social Scene, St Thomas, and Stephen Jones’ ACOS. Will have a relisten of them.
Never fully loved the album but it has some mega bangers on it
