How Good Was The Year (in music) - 2006?

1963 joined 62 and 61 near the bottom of the table , with only 1985 preventing a straight run of the earliest years at the foot of the table. We take the series back to the 21st century now with a year that @a-ghosts-heart was looking for - 2006.

A reminder of the premise of the thread

After a number of days of posting and reminiscing, we’ll be rating the music of the year out of ten, based on the albums, singles, gigs, whatever that stand out for you that year, and voting for our favourite nominated albums and songs.

Everyone can nominate one album and one song from the year which will then be collated into side-polls two days before the thread closes - please make it clear when you post a nomination for the poll (as opposed to just posting clips or lists of songs and albums you like, which are very welcome).

2006 was the year Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death and ultimately executed, Tony Blair announced his resignation as UK Prime Minister, train bombings in Mumbai killed 209 people, North Korea conducted its first nuclear test, Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published depictions of Muhammad, resulting in protests, civil unrest and boycotts from global Islamic populations and Zinedine Zidane was sent off in the World Cup final for headbutting the chest of an opponent who insulted his mother.

We said goodbye to J Dilla, Syd Barret, Augusto Pinochet, James Brown, Steve Irwin, Ferenc Puskas, Slobodan Milosevic, Chris Penn and Shelly Winters.

But how good was the music?

You have roughly one week to nominate one album and one song which will then go into a poll along with a number rating poll for year overall out of 10, which will close a few days later.

2006 was probably the year I was most invested in music, started my first permanent employment and so had disposable income, something that was scarce previously, and mainly spent it on gigs and records. Went to 7 music festivals (!) that summer too.

Listening to this massive drone-folk epic since it is the third highest rated album of the year on RYM - somehow haven’t heard of this lot before but see they have a few mentions in the forum and even this series previously. There are quite a few albums from 2006 that were and remain very important to me but love finding stuff like this that would never had hit my radar at the time.
