How Good Was The Year (in music) - 2017?

After 2001 sneaks into the top 10 with 8.1, at a time when a lot of us are busy doing our retrospective for this year, HGWTY asks you to stretch back a mere half-decade further and think about the music of 2017.

A reminder of the premise of the thread

After a number of days of posting and reminiscing, we’ll be rating the music of the year out of ten, based on the albums, singles, gigs, whatever that stand out for you that year, and voting for our favourite nominated albums and songs.

Everyone can nominate one album and one song from the year which will then be collated into side-polls two days before the thread closes - please make it clear when you post a nomination for the poll (as opposed to just posting clips or lists of songs and albums you like, which are very welcome).

Song nomination doesn’t need any dwelling over so just going to add it here straight away.

Nominate Song - Lorde - Green Light

It’s probably a contender for my song of the millennium so far.

Going to listen to this again today and see if I can figure out what I’ve been missing - really liked Tennis Courts and Royals but this song and the album just seemed a bit nothing to me. But have seen how highly revered it was and aways wondered if something will eventually click.

Is this a nomination or just a general comment?

Good and fairly eclectic year for me, although on the whole maybe more of a track year than an album year?, that said…

… I love a lot of those albums, jacaszek’s - kwiaty is just one of the most hauntingly beautiful albums and the track to blossoms, for personal reasons, probably means more to me than any other track, by the second note I’m in tears, but it’s good cathartic tears.

There’s not many albums with lyrics that I love not sung in english, Leda by trachimbrod is one of the best exceptions though, Just a great big dose of melodic post hardcore / post rock where understanding the lyrics comes secondary to the emotion behind the dual singing / shouting vocal and the instrumentation.

but for bringing shoegazing back in to my life, taking me back to my teenage self with ‘loveless’ on repeat and for vey much being a stunning beauty in it’s own right. I’m going to nominate album - midwife - like author, like daughter.

will have to give track nomination a bit more thought…

Increasingly feel that this is one of the best albums of all time

looking back, was a good rap year. good albums from big names (future, 2 chainz, migos, kendrick, even jay-z), good albums from underground / alternative stalwarts (open mike eagle, quelle chris, jonwayne), and a lot of the next generation of guys starting to really announce themselves as well (21 savage, youngboy nba, playboi carti). good stuff imo.

some bangers and that:

A good year iirc.
Here’s some stuff I was into:

Wolf Parade - Cry Cry Cry
Outlines - Conflats

Album nomination: Big Thief - Capacity

Interesting year with an album ranking that’s still fresh and changes every time I look at it, as once favorites fall out of favor and a few I didn’t hear till later start climbing up the ranks. Some big life changes (breakup, had to sell the house, single after 5 years, moved back into town). According to, I listened to the least amount of music since joining in 2006 except for 2018 somehow. Probably was out drinking a lot more.

Album nomination: Tyler, The Creator - Flowerboy
I first listened to this in October of the year (it was released in July), and aside from maybe hearing a few songs before, it was my intro to Tyler. It wasn’t my top album of the year at year’s end, but became so after casual listens in the following year and especially after IGOR.

Highlights for me:

Protomartyr - Relatives In Descent
Nadine Shah - Holiday Destination
Glassjaw - Material Control
Christian Fitness - Slap Bass Hunks
Mogwai - Every Country’s Sun
Converge - The Dusk In Us
Susanne Sundfør - Music for People in Trouble
IDLES - Brutalism
Kendrick Lamar - DAMN
Kairon; IRSE! - Ruination
EMA - Exhile In The Outer Ring
Algiers - The Underside of Power
Amenra - MASS VI

Maaaan some fantastic stuff here. Will do more chat below since there’s so much stuff, but will start from the top with

Album nomination: Japanese Breakfast - Soft Sounds from Another Planet

Gotta think about the song since @cloudb picked the ideal track

Album nomination Lorde - Melodrama

Song nomination Vince Staples - Bagbak

without much thought nominating
