They are genuinely one of my favourites, but they have a huge and at points pretty inscrutable discography.
There earlier stuff is fairly classic Warp records ambient techno. This is an early classic that they programmed to have a different beat in each bar in protest against anti rave legislation:
They moved towards a more technical sound in the 90’s, their fifth album was a great mix of complex beat programming with lovely chiming music box synths
Then they went full on experimental algorithm weirdness, with a very clinical and inhuman sound. Their next few albums gradually reigned the weirdness back, but were still pretty experimental and clinical.
Then they went through a phase of albums of increasingly ridiculous length, with sounds that were a mix of various things from their career to date, plus some very dense sonic layering.
Last year they released a couple of albums which went back to a warmer sound and more sensible lengths

I was in the Or-Tech-Ra camp but then a couple of friends whose favourite genre is what used to be called IDM (to include Autechre) referred to them always as Eau-Teck…the first syllable gallic and light; the subsequent more abrupt and silent of r.
If we move onto the music I am a fan of Tri Repetea, Incunabala and the Basscadet EPs…admire the latter stuff more than adore it.

Multi way tie for my favourite - between Garbage, Chiastic Slide, Lp5, Ep7, Exai and NTS sessions. Most of the rest are high up, not as keen on Inuncabula, Oversteps, Quaristice or Elseq (their worst imo)
