How many holes in a straw?

My initial instinct was “two obviously”, but upon reading the one hole rationale I’m not so sure.

It’s essentially a straw through your body, isn’t it? (Disclaimer, not a doctor)

I think the real answer is the hole is defined by how you relate to it.

It is one hole through your body
two separate holes as it relates to your bum and your mouth
Or if like if an asteroid is about to hit Earth, your mouthbutt is no hole at all.

Do you think the straw thinks it has two holes?

Mugs and doughnuts are the same according to mathematicians.

No probably not

Mathematicians are all mugs and doughnuts.

is it still a hole when it’s full of beer or does it have to be empty?

It’s hot two ends which look like holes. Either end of a tunnel is a hole But a straw is a tube.

It has two fluidly connected apertures

topologically speaking it’s definitely one hole

A t-shirt has 3 holes

Remove the sleeves and you’ve got a straw. You then have to add a hole for a each arm hole to get to the middle bit

Is this a straw poll

No.

I’m still baffled as to how that was ever a point of contention tbh

I think this is a bit like whether a peanut is a nut or a banana is a berry. People have come along and made a scientific definition for these things that doesn’t necessarily match the existing usage of the word. Scientifically yes a banana is a berry and a t shirt has 3 holes, but obviously a banana is not actually a fucking berry.
