Ever thought about putting Uno in there too?

My mum also has this rule, one of her many arbitrary ones for Scrabble. And she always wins, funny that.

I think there’s a big difference between games that are pretty much adaptations of parlour games (like Articulate) and games that are based on maths where the mechanics have been carefully considered and have probably been playtested to the nth degree.

With the former the rules are up for grabs. Whatever makes the game more fun.

With the latter you better have a really good justification for changing the rules and even then it’ll need assessing over several games before I’d agree to a permanent change.

Would you believe that I’ve let myself be knocked out of a big tournament because I was too polite to call a judge on someone who’d made an enormous mistake that would (should) have earned them a game loss?

Because it’s true.

I don’t know what to believe anymore.

Usual caveats for new players, people who take too long for their turn, etc.

I’ve had a game of Citadels go over the two hour mark and I hated the experience so much that I gave it away.

You’d hate playing with me, I can’t be bothered to think about my turn until it gets to my go then I sit there for 5 minutes and eventually do the most obvious thing.

So she’s getting points for ZA, when that is literally not an abbreviation for pizza that any normal person has ever used. Then I put down QUIM on a triple word score and it’s not in the book so I’m not allowed it even though everyone knows what it means. I mean I’m all for playing by the rules but we have to recognise when the rules are stupid

Very infrequent that I’ll be up for a game but I’ll go with whatever rules people want to play by normally. Can’t be arsed with the alternative.

I reckon there’s signficicantly more people who play Monopoly incorrectly than there is people who play it exactly by the rules.

with Monopoly any rule that makes the game be over quicker is fine with me

A straightforward game with friends in the pub - I can be very flexible around rules and such. Usually more annoyed by people wanting to play complicated games in this environment or by people not paying attention and needing everything explaining again when it’s their turn.

At home with friends playing something more complex - you will play by the rules and we will consult the rulebook to make sure.

Yeah the problem is that people tend to house rule it such that it takes longer.

I’m generally open to sensible house rules that shorten any medium or long game anyway.

This is why I don’t play Scrabble anymore. The rules are the rules.

What game was ruined for you to inspire this thread, @saps

My Monopoly didn’t have the rule book so we had to just make it up. (This was pre-google, obv)
