I don’t think they are owned by Spotify are they? I thought Vinyl Me Please just put out some of the spotify live sessions.

I had not heard of Bandcamp since rejoining these boards in the last few weeks (call it a 15 years hiatus from really paying attention to music). I think it is great. I would be interested to know how much money goes to the artist from say a $20 vinyl + digital sale compared with $8 digital sale?

I think the answer to this thread is keep it simple. Realistically I think most of us will have a Spotify or Tidal subscription but you should buy the music you like, particularly for developing artists, and tell others to do the same. Before streaming we had no choice to buy our music so just put yourself back in that mindset. This is particularly the case for those of us who have more money now than we did as students in the 90s/early 2000s!

On one of the podcasts I listen to (No Agenda) they talk about the “value for value” model where their listeners (producers) voluntarily “donate” to the show (in reality it provides an income to the hosts, but that is understood because people like the product). I think we need to think about the music community in the same mindset because the artists discussed on this board are not going to be those earning any material income from streaming, ever. The genie is out of the bottle.

bandcamp takes a 15% cut which they waive on bandcamp fridays

Looks like they’ve been doing this for a while. Some sort of settings for emails and then if they have an ‘exclusive’ by an artist you are following you get a notification.

going slightly off the topic of streaming but surely this isn’t normal for a label/artist split? The label I presume is Domino.

So Spotify is at least partly owned by the labels right? And they’ve set the payments so that 80% goes to the Masters owners i.e. the label.

Ok I know nothing of how this stuff works but this sounds dodgy af.

Interesting to see that makes the point that it’s a poor outcome for the label as well – that their share of royalties also don’t come close to covering the cost of making the album. So who exactly does any of this work for?

Majors (and indies) with huge catalogues where the music basically just creates money in perpetuity with no investment needed.

Already we’re seeing a shift to single or EP-based investment in newer artists where they will just throw shit at the wall and see what sticks, with the hope that one or two tracks will take off, rather than investing in an expensive album/body of work and all the promo/marketing associated with that.

Apple Music supposedly pays $0.01 per stream so that’s clearly not a big ask.

10 track album would equal $0.10 so 100 full album plays roughly equivalent to a download buy. I’d say $0.02 per stream would be a better representation but it’s at least in the ballpark.

Obviously all the label split type issues are separate to that.

So are the labels forcing this split on the platforms as part of their conditions of availability?

Edit - oh it’s probably determined at the contract between artist and label end isn’t it.

maybe but the specific nuances of this deal

basically every signed band i know is on an 80/20 or similar deal. don’t know who TTA is (or Austra) but small bands being offered their first album deal or whatever on a small label aren’t getting handed 50/50 deals. not that domino is small obviously but i’m sure it was ‘take it or leave it’
