Hugh Hefner - RIP

He has a different mod every night in his bed.

Taken from Facebook:

ā€œIf you can build a publishing empire based entirely on your teenage wet dreams, have some of the best thinkers of your generation write for you, help usher in the sexual revolution during an era of extreme puritanism, all while actively (and financially) supporting civil rights, LGBTQ rights, womenā€™s reproductive rights, pay equality, gay marriage, press freedom, the abolition of sodomy laws, and then you get to die peacefully in your sleep at the ripe old age of 91, Iā€™m going to go ahead and say youā€™ve lived a pretty good life.ā€

This is quite a good article I read this morning (though itā€™s from a few years ago), I guess essentially the answer is ā€œitā€™s complicatedā€.

Exactly. I think ā€˜helped usher in the sexual revolutionā€™ is a euphemism for promotion of women-as-objects and the setting of unrealistic desirability standards.

for the record iā€™m not condoning this quote or hugh hefner at all, if anything it was a toss up between posting it here and in the ā€˜awful things people post on social mediaā€™ thread. i think playboy is a very toxic brand. BUT thought there was something in it worth discussing / a counterpart to most of the reactions id seen on all my social media which reacted to his death along the lines of ā€˜lolā€™

I may be wrong but didnā€™t Playboy feature black women when that was unheard of really?

(again may be wrong, just read this somewhere)

RIP Hugh. Thanks for the mammaries.

i also donā€™t doubt that a lot of the progressive causes he supported were because the tides of opinion were changing and it was a bankable move. playboy being pro LGBTQ is exactly as progressive as Barclays and HSBC having floats on pride parades

Think we should nipple this in the bud.

Even if it did, itā€™s promoting them within a framework of oppressionā€¦so Iā€™m not sure really how valuable that is.

Probably fair.

Bit like David Cameron with gay marriage. Did some good stuff here and there that probably deserves some recognition, but it mean he was a good person - thereā€™s plenty of dreadful stuff he should also be held accountable for.

Really enjoying reading this as usher the person rather than usher the verb btw
