in first year i jokingly called my housemate a typical only child and then later that day caught him googling ‘only child characteristics’ or something, found it really adorable

Yes, I am an only child.

I’ve never felt normal either. When I was a kid I always felt more comfortable around adults and less comfortable around children my age, which is apparently a common characteristic. Maybe it’s because as an only child, you’re less constantly ‘exposed’ to other children of a similar age since you don’t live with any, compared to the overwhelming majority of kids who do? It might explain why I was very, very shy at school and felt less ‘with it’ than everyone else (and why early secondary school was so intensely horrible).

Socially it’s shit, and I’d say it has messed me up. On the other hand it’s a luxury because the resources and attention of your parents isn’t divided and you never have to share anything. Definitely worth it overall.

It’s never your intention though, is it? You’ve played this card quite a few times when you’ve posted something and caused offence. “Just throwing some thoughts out there” (or whatever you said) is just another way of saying “ooh I’m only playing devil’s advocate!”

think you’re reading too much into this, man. I’m a nice guy, I think, but from time to time I’ll say something that oversteps the mark. I’ll either get a dressing-down, or a banning for a while. I’m happy with this.

this is who I am, man. accept my flaws, or don’t. I’m a guy who shoots from the hip and I honestly don’t think I’m gonna dramatically alter my schtick anytime soon. in fact, I definitely won’t be changing.

with this in mind, I’d suggest trying to police someone or something else from here on in
