The first reply Ryan got on this site (two his second thread, promoting himself in Music not Classifieds) was making the same joke on his name that thesewoodenideas did and he just sort of took it. Not great and I then was pretty dickish with the first one of his I noticed where he asked some query like “Who’s the greatest singer of the era,” and I made a geology-based era joke.

Basically the stuff we agreed wasn’t a great way to welcome new users but equally as pointed out, he just doesn’t do anything. So I asked him to engage and that got him angry and since other users then said he was fine and I should leave it, I did.

If you check the end of this thread of his

you’ll see I engaged with him and weirdly got the most lucid and detailed posts yet. He’s not come back and said more though so maybe a failure and it’s clear he’s still thinking in a very strangely combative manner so who knows. But I was gratified to get whole paragraphs of thoughts in response…

Not a fan of his attitude as pointed out but equally it does feel like he escalated in a response to a degree of negativity from us, is my point I suppose (you can see what I mean if you have the energy to scroll through his ‘activity’ section on his profile). Tricky really, I don’t appreciate his random non-engaging posting but I don’t really like how we all responded to it either.

Just to pick up on this point:

Unfortunately this is down to Discourse and out of our hands. It has been raised by a number of different forums that the new polls system they’ve foisted on us needs to be tweaked again and it sounds like they’re looking into it so hopefully it will update again soon and be more useful again.

EDIT Oh sorry, it was picked up on a bit later. I shoulda scrolled!

I’d kind of got used to the new format, but I’m grateful to everyone here who’s pointed out how to make it revert to the old one. I look at posts across many categories so often it was quite a faff keeping up with them.

I like the new set up. Feels like less of a social/music split and I’ve been able to notice some more interesting stuff on the social side I would have missed. Think everyone who thought it through did a really good job.

yeah people need to start more threads
say what you like about ryandalmaskrnb but his commitment to thread starting is exemplary

it’s weird eh. some people are really averse to starting a thread.

the film ones are getting better all the time on this front at least? given we had one giant multi-1000 post thread for films just 18 months ago, and now we have two diff monthly threads

but more threads about specific films/genres would be good too

no one wants more beer wanker specific threads though, so that one can probably safely stay giant and rolling

Think split boards has really helped, much calmer around here. I’m not sure what else we could do really but I’m sure suggestions of solutions would be welcome.

I always manage to miss the big stuff. Did lots of people leave the boards?

What happened? Minus the sensitive details obviously.

  • I browse the site by category
  • I use the collected ‘latest’ function

bit of both

Yeah I spent a few months off the boards and wouldn’t mind knowing a little more on what happened. People have mentioned it being heated, and for those of us who weren’t there, it would be good to know broadly what was going on (without naming individual accounts or even implying who was involved).

I start my daily DiSing by clicking on the music forum as that’s all I really engage with. I then use latest/clicking on the D :anchor: S logo for everything else. I’ve learnt to stay out of certain types of threads, but there’s no one topic I’d mute.

I’m here pretty regularly, but it also passed me by as I mostly stick to threads about rap and beer.

So maybe the board splits will help as it might stop more casual users like myself bowling into serious threads and annoying people because we don’t really know the posters as well as we perhaps should before wading in.

There isn’t really a simple non-detailed/specific answer. The most general way I can put it is there were a few members who specifically had a lot of friction when they interacted and despite their best attempts not to interact it blew up in a particular thread over misunderstandings, grievances were aired and none of them felt happy staying on the boards for their own MH/enjoyment.

Yeah i suspect this (the bowling into threads being all IMO) will be less with the new set up, and I think that’s the environment which is most likely to end with people being upset

Thanks for the info (and thanks @IvorDewdney @chuff too).

That really sucks (especially re the ableism). I hope the users that left are getting on okay, but regardless of whether they want to come back or not, it’s stuff for us to think about collectively and do better with.

I don’t agree with this, I really don’t like the idea that someone might be put off posting in the mental health or parenting threads for example because they’re concerned that their posts won’t be well received by existing posters.
