I need people with knowledge of roads and villages in the southwest

I’m driving to cardiff tomorrow and from where I am (Eltham) it’ll take roughly 4 hours. But I’d like to stop for lunch in a pretty village or town I can get to easily by nipping off the motorway.

Pls help. My knowledge of this part of England is incredibly shit.

Think Cardiff is in Wales. Hope this helps.

Old Sodbury sounds fitting

Not all that far to Chew Valley Lake I don’t think. Nice round there.

I COULD stop for lunch in wales but the timing of when I’m leaving London means it’d be better on this side of the border

Lots of nice villages around there too. There’s a really good village shop in one of them that does massive pasties.

Once got off to try to stop at the signposted Mere services. Got lost and went through Warminster. Looked nice enough but can’t remember setting anywhere to eat

I’d go to Gloucester Services - the Tebay of the South

Could go to this after you’ve eaten

Assuming you’re going along the M4, I’d be tempted to get off the M4 at Hungerford and rejoin at Swindon so you travel along the A4 for a bit. This would give you a few options:

  • Going into Hungerford itself. It’s fairly sleepy and small but there’s one or two nice cafes there and a good bookshop.
  • Stopping at Cobbs Farm Shop, which has a great menu, a nice farm shop itself, and a fair bit of countryside to mooch around.
  • Getting something and taking it to Savernake forest, where you can see the actual King of Limbs.
  • Going into Marlborough, where there are loads of good cafes, tea rooms, and restaurants

If do stop at Marlborough and you’ve got time afterwards, you could keep driving along the A4 for a bit and rejoin the M4 at Chippenham. It’s a nicer journey and you see some of the Avebury stones, Silbury Hill, and a white horse etched in the chalk hill at Cherhill.
