Additional: obviously we collect a lot more than these things but (a) provision of fresh food / bread etc varies from place to place and (b) most foodbanks are swimming in the obvious items like pasta and beans.

Cheers. If you can’t make it down to a foodbank during opening hours then loads of supermarkets have permanent collection points too.

I was going to ask - my Tesco has one and bar the odd can I haven’t paid much attention, do they generally go straight to the food banks?

Also, is there any point putting in the odd ‘luxury’ item - like nice crisps/choc biscuits or is it more a question of quantity over quality?

It should specify on the board at the front. I think most go to the local Foodbank- at ours, we have a volunteer who goes to every week and collects all the donations and takes them down to the Foodbank.

I think some supermarkets donate to Fareshare, which is a slightly different but equally worthy cause (they tend to distribute surplus supermarket food to places like soup kitchens, day centres for vulnerable people etc).

EDIT: and I’d say yes in normal circumstances, but we usually get loads of chocolates, sweets and so on around Christmas, and they have a shorter shelf life than other items.

And in terms of general donations e.g. cereal, milk etc: I tend to buy around the “supermarket own brand” level unless there’s a value product that I know is decent enough to cook with (e.g. chopped tomatoes). We’ll happily accept luxury or value versions though, we tend to get a pretty wide mix of donations so it all works out okay.

When they were younger yes. Now eldest is 10 so perfectly able to do it himself so I only reall take over if he half builds something, gets distracted and I get fed up with it taking up the lounge floor…I did a lot of his ghostbuster house last year as doing the walls etc was a bit repetitive …he got to do the cool interiors!
