Jessie J wrote the song (with a production team) so it wasn’t really palmed off on her, she obviously chose happily to sing it as it was.

Only just got around to giving this a listen. I didn’t think too much of Joy… (enjoyable but didn’t stick with me) so I just wrote the new one off but I heard a single and it impressed me.

Overall I think it’s really good, superficially ‘more of the same’ but this feels far tighter and more interestingly produced. Certainly works for me. The lyrics are maybe a bit off at times I suppose but I don’t mind them. It’s a little too clever true, but I enjoy the way he layers it all, doesn’t seem too far off Falco’s work.

See some Fontaines DC chat up thread and for me this is definitely a better album and Fontaines DC’s 2020 release, although the latter have a few individual moments that beat anything on here.

I also think the cover art for Ultra Mono is absolutely excellent.

Yeah I mean that covers that to me. Clever isn’t about intellectual it’s about overthinking stuff, archly placing your lyrics.

I really dont think the lyrics are comparable to Falco’s. Falco’s might be silly somethines but they have a wit and a charm about them also.

UM is gun noises and barking.

I say this as a fan of all Idles previous work

find it a bit odd how much they’re getting jeered just for having a song with some onomatopoeia in the lyrics

Watched them play that on the BBC thing and didn’t think it was as bad in context as it looks away from the song. Just stupidly simple, but clearly by design. Plucking that bit out and pointing at in isolation seems a little pointless.

yeah some reactions feel a bit like this to me

(still plenty of bad/clunky lyrics on the album though)

I’m not saying he’s as good I just get a similar sense of pacing and notions.

Think people would look past it if they were the only bad lyrics on the album tbf

Idles currently on Lammo (because of course). Yer man from Idles is claiming that the lyrics are deliberately rubbish so that Idles songs stand out against other (presumably good) songs. Right.

Given my favourite bit on any song this year is this from RTJ4, I’m not sure I can pick on them for this lyric in isolation;

“What-what, what-what? My motherfuckin’ Uzi weighs a ton
Hit the drum, do you hear it go, “Brrup-pum-pum-pum”

Had my first listen today finally, yeah it’s pretty devoid of anything isn’t it

Musically it’s just ok but, yeah, I don’t feel the need to listen to it again

I assumed it was more that people thought the previous album’s lyrics were definitely better. If these aren’t much different from the last album I’m not sure why everyone’s surprised.
