If I download something, say a pdf, onto my phone

does my phone get heavier? Do full hard drives weigh more than empty ones?

I’m not going to google it, and I don’t think you should either. We should talk this out.

Yes the same way that your head gets heavier every time you learn something.

Depends.

  • Do 1s and 0s weigh different amounts?
  • How many 1s and 0s are being written to the drive and what are they replacing?
  • Does a 1 replacing a 1 weigh more than a 1 replacing a 0? Does it become a heavyweight 1?

Short serious answer: yes, but very very minutely.

Is a hard drive just loads of 0s and some of them get changed to 1s when they become mp3s or something? What’s going on there

Fucking knew it

Mass created from nothing. Tiny big bangs. Tiny bangs.

it gets slightly heavier yes, but this is offset by the amount of battery used to download the file which actually weighs more than the document you downloaded

so in fact, your phone gets lighter

what if you download a battery

You wouldn’t steal a battery, so why the hell are you downloading one.
