OMG I literally just did this for my honeymoon!

The island of Ischia is stunning! I’ll upload a photo of the view from our hotel room. Ischia is great. You can drive or get a bus around the whole island easily. There are some really cool places and it’s not too touristy.

For the second part of our honeymoon we went to the Amalfi coast. Do not stay in Positano unless you love places rammed with tourists. The town of Amalfi is much nicer. We stayed in Praiano which is between the two and very pleasant.

I’ll write more when I’m home from work.

Stayed in Sorrento which was very nice, we could see Vesuvius from our room (Hotel Minerva I think (http://www.minervasorrento.com/), it might have changed a fair bit as this was 20 years ago!). However as my girlfriend at the time was a teacher we went in August and it was seriously fucking hot!

Thanks. No not now. To busy at work but maybe September or something.

Italy is one of the few places where brass knuckles are legal to buy. I’d go somewhere that sold them and stock up.

forgot to log in as prison keith

of the places I’ve been to in Italy, Sicily was my favourite. mostly because going up Etna was fucking great. Puts Vesuvius to shame.

Heh. Nobody ever says Italy.

The constant threat of being erupted on presumably gives Etna the lead over Vesuvius in excitement stakes!

One country I want to visit. Only went once, and that was to a football match in Milan, so doesn’t really count as it was airport-stadium-back to airport trip.

I’d just Rome about

Can I have some tips for

Rome
Florence
Bergamo

please lads

Florence:

You MUST MUST MUST get a sandwich from here.
The best sandwiches i’ve ever had in my life. Went twice in 2 days.

Ooh fuck that looks good, i’m bookmarking it

They do little glasses of house wine for a euro and you just chose from a load of reds in a bucket and pour yourself. I love it. Would go back specifically for that sandwich.

The thing I loved about Florence the most was just popping into little random coffee shops and standing up for an espresso. I was completely wired the whole time and had serious withdrawals when I got home.

Also if you like chocolate and wanna get gifts for people, this place was amazing and had ice cream too.
 Gianduja is life.

me

Not a wine or coffee drinker so I’m going to feel out of place. That chocolate place looks sick, thanks!

Do you like aperol spritz? They drink that a lot.
Or little beers!

There is a brewdog there

I’m off the booze for 2019 and maybe the rest of my life :nail_care:

I do like both of those things though :frowning:

In Rome, make sure you pre-book tickets for the Vatican, and for the Forum and Colloseum you can get a combined pre-booked ticket - which means you will skip all the enormous queues and feel very clever.

In Florence, go to the Bargello sculpture gallery, it’s wonderful and absolutely empty compared to the Uffizi and Academia (though you should do those too)

Ta!

I had a look at pre-booking the Vat and Easter tickets aren’t available yet, think I’ll have to be pretty quick as it’s Easter and the whole thing is closed to non-religious types on the Sunday and Monday.

Booking to go to Rome at Easter was a bad move now that I think about it.

Are those Spanish Steps any good? Just look like steps to me.

Florence:

Assuming that you’ve never been before, then you’ll want to go to the Uffizi and to see the statue of David, but they will be busy and it’s best to pre-book your slot. The cathedral dome is worth climbing, and the crypt underneath is worth seeing as well. I can’t remember if you can pre-book these, but try and go when it’s not likely to be busy.

I would definitely take time to walk around Fort Belvedere, Boboli Gardens and up to San Miniato al Monte for great views over the city.

Florence is busy and the main squares will be packed with tourists, meaning that those parts of the city can feel a bit like a theme park. South of the river in San Frediano is much better for good, neighbourhood restaurants, with better food, more reasonable prices and better atmosphere. We liked the following places to eat

  • Trattoria dell’Orto - Via dell’Orto, 35A, 50124 (probably our favourite)
  • Antico Ristoro di Cambi - Via S.Onofrio, 1R, 50123
  • Trattoria Al Tranvai - Piazza Torquato Tasso, 14r, 50124
