Just back from Mull and Iona.

I recommend both Mull and Iona very, very highly.

My favourite places in Scotland. Not really a spiritual person but they’re magical islands absolutely steeped in Celtic Christian history

Genuinely breathtaking places, loved it out there and almost a bit annoyed with myself that it took us this long to get over given they’re really not that big a trek from Glasgow.

And aye, not especially spiritual myself, but there’s something about the islands that is pretty special.

Is it a ferry from Oban? Was just in that direction last week, and it was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to in the UK

We were up near Oban a couple of weeks ago when it was roasting, loved it. Have spent a fair bit of time on the west coast and have never had such good weather to enjoy it! Would recommend further north (e.g. Ullapool) for a similarly beautiful landscape.

Yeah, ferry from Oban to Craigmure on Mull is the simplest way, only takes about 45 mins to do the crossing. If you want to do Iona, it’s about an hour on single track (but pretty well maintained) roads across the island and then a 10 minute ferry on the other side.

We actually went the long way round and drove up through Ardnamurchan to get the ferry at Lochaline because the Oban ferry was fully booked: meant we had the added bonus of seeing some absolutely beautiful scenery around there too.

Lovely spot, great shout, cheers!

Ardnamurchan is my favourite place in the world I reckon. We usually go for a couple of weeks in February. Cold and nobody about. So beautiful. Always drive down to the lighthouse, climb Ben Hiant and watch the eagles. We’ve done pretty much all the walks on walkhighlands (love that website).

Been over to Mull from Lochaline a couple of times… definitely somewhere I want to go for a proper holiday.

Gonna go here this morning. Quite excited!!

Major disappointment in the Vale household due to the Up Helly Aa Festival being postponed again (now scheduled for Jan 2023) due to covid. Got flights and accommodation booked for Lerwick in Jan next year. Any suggestions for things to do in Shetland in mid-winter gratefully received

The man that runs it is maybe the nicest man I’ve ever met

Look at some lovely landscapes
Marvel at how it gets dark at 2pm
Uhhhh

something something puffins…

Not in January, sadly. Still lots of birds to see though.

I’d go island hopping. Have always wanted to go to Fair Isle.

One of my collegues husbands is from Shetland so can ask. Though think he’s from one of the smaller islands and sees Lerwick as like London.

Is @Ella_Megablast the go-to for Arran advice? Do you know of any good wildcamping spots within an hour or two cycle from Lochranza please? I’m in Oban and have a train booked home from Glasgow tomorrow which I cannot get to due to strikes tomorrow, so considering cycling back instead. Can head south from here tomorrow and hopefully make it to Claonaig in time for the last ferry at 19.00. Looks like it’s an A-road all the way which isn’t ideal though

There is a direct bus from oban to Glasgow, dunno if it will get you there for your train.

Interesting… Will I be able to take my bike on it, I wonder? (I will check this out, thank you!)

sorry for the late reply! Anywhere on Arran’s west coast is great for a bikey wildcamp (turn right off the Cloanaig ferry) or if you’re heading towards Brodick and the other ferry Sannox beach (8 miles the other way, on the other side of the big hill) would make a great wild camp. Basically don’t go far enough to reach the main villages and anywhere out of sight of the road will be grand

Ace, thanks so much! I’ve only ever done the Brodick to Lochranza route anticlockwise around the island when doing the 5 Ferries so would be good to go the other way around. Somehow have just made the 17.40 ferry so have more daylight to find a spot now (and more importantly have a well earned beer in the sun!)
