Irish band 'The Great Balloon Race".

Found this in my tapes; don’t think I ever listened to it. Listened to it and absolutely love it. Anybody know anything about them? Online info is lacking.

From Cork?

Yo!

Yep, they’re from Cork. I’m pals with the lads, their drummer Dan plays with me in a few groups. They’re an incredible band, I always have one or two of their songs going around in my head.

They’re not doing much now, between having kids and life but I can find out if they’ll be back.

Is this the album you have?

Was released on Kantcope, a small Cork label. Everything they’ve released is great, I own the lot.

First album is here, not as tight and knotty but still great.

Bought a couple of their tapes in Optic Music in Dublin when it was open - Great Balloon Race, the first Fixity tape and a Roslyn Steer one. Great stuff. Should have picked up Arthur Itis too.

Think I played one of their songs in an early Music League round here, can’t remember how many points it got but I suspect not as many as I hoped.

Think I might have a spare of this that I can post up to you if you want?

Yes, it’s that one. Right up my street; really clever stuff.

Meant to be doing an album pick thing for a thing and was going to do tapes including that one but realised I have no facts to say, owing to knowing zero about the band!

Weird that this thread got bumped, I’d just found my second copy of I’m Great by Arthuritis. DM your address and I’ll post it up.

can’t think of who these remind me of, which is a good thing (especially for a band with a basis of guitar, bass, drums, vox. hard to achieve)

oh neat, it just went all floaty (like balloons!)

perhaps some Sam Prekop? some DMST, BSS too (second track)

love it

Yeah, it’s really great isn’t it? They could do with playing some UK dates!

Woah, woah, woah, let them play some Irish dates first!

(Doubt they’ll play anywhere for a long time, if ever again. Project I’m in with two of them is probably the next thing they’ll do.)

Phwoar! Very quick burst of that gets at least 2 thumbs up! Looking forward to proper listen later. Aces.

Think there’s sixteen of us on that, live improv. We’ve done a few shows with a similar lineup over the years, took a break during Covid obvs.

Dan and Marcus from the Balloon Race are both on sax there, I’m on bass. Elaine Howley is one of the vocalists.

I’m getting a fair bit of Grizzly Bear from it?

Enjoying a lot. Bookmarked for next Bandcamp Friday.

Yep, they were big fans of Veckatimest as far as I know. Good shout.

Got word that they’ll be releasing a new album, probably in the new year.
