I was actually thinking about this yesterday and I don’t ever think of his activities as nerdy ones because he was also a really good musician and was in some decent bands and stuff but actually he used to make airfix models all the time and one of our regular days out was going to the airport observation deck and listening to the pilots on those radios that all the proper nerds had. So maybe he was a proper nerd.

has loads of books, reads a lot of history and is generally smart.
likes to express the importance of having a balanced life rather than being too into one thing though so may be an anti-nerd

It’s sad really. My dad:

Interests: None.
Hobbies: None.
Sports (spectator or participant): None.
Friends: None.
Currently reading: Nothing.

He’s a really intelligent guy but doesn’t apply it to much. To his credit, now he’s retired he volunteers with a charity and helps out less fortunate families around their houses a bit every week. He’s good at DIY. Otherwise he sits in front of the TV. Mostly Dave, mostly Top Gear re-runs. He likes cars I guess. Not a bad bloke just has massively low self-confidence to try anything new or to meet new people. He’s a tory turned shy-tory (since raising a bunch of lefties). Wish he was able to apply himself or get passionate about anything enough to be considered “nerdy”.

Lovely reading about all your great dads. It’s made me want to try even harder not to let addictions/compulsions take up all of my time and energy so my kids can post in this thread in 30 years time xx

this thread was actually great, not sure why i was so cynical

my dad is into buildings (studied architecture, became a building surveyor) and F1 and prog rock and books about physics, i get the impression that the moon landing in 1969 (he was 15) was basically his favourite moment as a kid, although he also snuck out of school to go see the Rollings Stones in Hyde Park in 1969… he was blown away by King Crimson who were support and basically played the entirety of their first album, as it sounds on the record

My dad organises the South Lanarkshire Netherlands Philatelic society, has tons of stamps and deep interest in trains. Slightly offset by him and my mum living Amsterdam in the 70s and going to watch Cruyff play every other weekend. But in general pretty nerdy

My dad is definitely a nerd about music and poetry but that’s his job so not sure that counts. He loves football and food and playing with lego with his kid (my half sister) but I wouldn’t say he is particularly nerdy about anything.

Oh wait, he does 2 maybe nerdy things. He skips every morning for exercise and counts how many times he skips and tells everyone how great skipping is. Thankfully he does it i the back garden of his house so not as many people can see. Also he drinks a bourbon every night with a cup of tea, and alternates sips. That’s weird but I’m not siren it’s nerdy

My pa:

  • Retired trusts and wills expert for HSBC (so basically tax avoidance I think)

  • walks down the shop to get the Telegraph every day, which he skims then spends all day doing the cryptic crossword.

  • Loves cricket, only reads books from his bookcase full of cricket books, still plays it quite a lot too. Dragged my mum round Australia following the cricket, is planning to repeat this holiday.

  • Takes part in specialist sport-only pub quiz leagues with his mates and revises with some kind of sport trivia annal which contains lists of Olympic medalists etc

  • Hates DIY, terrible at it

  • Has a decent dad rock lp collection with side orders of country and jazz fusion of the Zappa/Canterbury scene variety. Goes to gigs of guitarists and bands he used to like and either finds them brilliant or sad

  • Has inbuilt brain GPS and can navigate anywhere, capable of road chat for days

  • Likes mowing the lawn and growing veg

  • Nerd
  • Not nerd
