Realised I cant do a top ten as Id just be rearranging the 15 or so Ive actually read, but here are my faves:

7 – Rebel Planet

6 – Deathtrap Dungeon.
Good standard trope leather pants fantasy stuff

5 - Seas of Blood

4 – City of Thieves

3 – Citadel of Chaos.
One look at that cover and I’m back in 1983, playing fighting fantasy on the couch, listening to Mike Oldfield “Moonlight Shadow”. Simpler times…

2 – Talisman of Death.
Great story, with fleshed-outed enemies
The first one besides Scorpion Swamp that they franchised out to other writers.
(SS was written by the “other” US Steve Jackson)

1 – House of Hell.
Metal as fuck and genuinely disturbing. Also, one of your choices involves choosing duck or lamb for dinner, class.

Yeah there’s a phrase you’re supposed to look out for which lets you skip forward to a sekrit outcome, and in an earlier version it’s not there. Drove 12 year old me insane trying to get out of that dungeon.

Looking through the catalogue and based upon my vague memories of them, I think

25 - Beneath Nightmare Castle
36 - Armies of Death
19 - Demons of the Deep
15 - The Rings of Kether

Would be decent contenders for this sort of group format. Although doing one of the stark raving bonkers ones, like 42 - Black Vein Prophecy or 45 - Spectral Stalkers, would probably maintain interest.

Stalkers has a wild premise but uses it fairly lucidly and is quite satisfying, I’d unironically recommend it. BVP is a total fever dream.

What makes a FF book easier/harder? They always seemed like a sequence of basically random choices to me.

There’s generally two types: The ones where’s the only one true solution (as in you have to make almost every choice given to you correctly) and ones where there’s multiple solutions (generally you have to get a certain amount of something to win and there’s numerous ways of getting it). In a more meta sense some books are harder to cheat because the dickhead author puts a number on the McGuffin that you have to write down and then turn to the corresponding chapter when you need to use it. Rather than “If you have the crystal of not dying turn to 167, if you don’t turn to 5”.

All of them have “Oh you turned left, that means you die to a werebadger then” style choices in them, though.

I had the one that sent you round in circles. It was much too hard anyway without than additional quirk.

Appointment with FEAR would be a good one to do that isn’t all elves, orcs and eating provisions in the shade of trees.
