Not sure quite what I’ve posted that is so offensive!

As I said, the thing that apparently happened is bad.

My point is that some people shouting offensive stuff doesn’t usually make the front BBC news page, and the PM doesn’t usually comment on it.

Obviously shouting horrible stuff is horrible, and ideally it would never happen…

You put antisemitic in scare quotes, expressed doubt that the report was true when there was no cause for doubt, said it might be anti-israel instead of antisemitic, and said it was only on the main page because of jewish lobbying?

The artical says ‘antisemitic’, hence quote. Not sure why that is an issue?

The prominence of the article and the fact that the PM commented on the incident are interesting I think.

Anyway, I apologise for any offense; it wasn’t my intention.

Please also try to be more precise and think about your use of words e.g. “Jewish/Israel lobby”

Conflating Jews in general with Israel is offensive and wrong. People representing and advocating for the Israeli government do not represent Jewish people. They’re absolutely not the same thing and it does a lot of harm when people conflate them. Jews are not accountable or answerable in any way for Israel!

The idea that we even need a “lobby” to persuade the UK government into supporting Israel is also questionable.

Scare quotes are when a quotation is used unnecessarily because the quoter wants to distance themselves from the view expressed in the quote. By putting ‘antisemitic’ in quotes, what you’re doing is distancing yourself from a claim that someone shouting “fuck all the jews” is antisemitic. If you think it is antisemitic, which you seemed doubtful of as you said it might be anti-israeli, then you don’t need the quotes.

I mean, I sort of assumed that it was unlikely that anybody posting here is going to be a mad Jew or Muslim hater. I wrote what I wrote in good faith, and assumed that anybody reading it would take for granted that I’m not a wild nut-bag myself, but we live and learn!

speaking of using your words more carefully…

bit of humility wouldn’t go amiss here really, we all get things a bit wrong but it’s the doubling down that really comes across badly.

No one likes being criticised but I think a bit of self reflection would be useful here.

I think you (and all of us) need to be careful with assumptions that people will ‘just know’ you’re not an antisemite. I’m not Jewish but i was spesking to a close friend today about recent events and the stuff people post on social media, and yeah, they don’t know.

Is wild nut bag also offensive now?

I am literally king of offending people!

Anyway, lessons have been learned, and I can assure you all that I will not be repeating my terrible…thing what I did.

Also, I am very, very sorry about that thing what I did. So very sorry.

I’m sure you didn’t mean any offence, but it’s a bit of a ‘read the room’ situation. There’s a whole load of great resources available here for posters to be able to take a heat check of what is and isn’t considered appropriate in the community, and it helps to make sure that people don’t cause offence unintentionally. It’s not a case of fun policing or trying to close down debate, but more to make sure that your point gets across with clarity and without causing anyone else to be uncomfortable. We’re a welcoming bunch of folks who want to make sure everyone feels safe and there’s been a tonne of work put in to try to make that as easy as possible for everyone!

happy to have a chat with you over DM if you don’t see the problem or aren’t sure why the language really matters here

Gosh, thanks for all that, but realistically I’ll just withdraw and not trouble this thread any further!

Nighty-night!

bye

Just wish there was a way to bypass people getting defensive about being pulled up on things like this.

Everyone’s been guilty of saying something wrong intentionally, but sometimes it seems reaaally hard to stop a “hey, that’s maybe something you need to think about for s moment” from devolving into a Corncob/Glinners kinda situation.

Good effort everyone ITT, and hopefully @ChampionRabbit can have a go at thinking about things a little bit…

Look at my extremely fired-up, thoughtless posts up thread. Look at the responses they got, and the self-reflection I did as a result. Consider the type of board this is. Please.
