Issue with Spotify players

What shall we do?

My gut says fuck Spotify and let’s try to use YouTube and Bandcamp

Anyone adding a link to Spotify could could had a link rather than a embedded player?

they work fine on a desktop and can be useful, but the releases thread was completely unreadable on my phone this morning, constantly crashing and reloading the page, so yeah, all for ditching the spotify links. At least until the issue can be resolved, if it can be.

i think this is nice in theory but the new releases post is so useful and if it becomes a chore to post links in it then i probably won’t bother

not had any issues on my phone - wonder if its ios/browser specific?

I’d be surprised if many of us are still using Spotify given the threads about it

Is it because people use release radar to pick stuff to share in the thread?

pretty sure everyone posting spotify links is still using spotify

I don’t use Spotify but have used its links in the new releases thread when there isn’t a bandcamp option. The little audio previews mean it’s better than anything else.

Is there any way to allow users to turn off plug ins they don’t want?

Trying to stop people sharing one particular platform requires moderation to ensure it happens and I think that enough is asked of the moderators already.

Turning off link previews is simple enough:

Personally I’ve had no problems with Spotify-heavy threads on desktop or mobile, but from multiple people calling it out, it’s clearly a real issue. I’m guessing the new embeds are memory hungry, and older devices suffer most?

Also note that many people actively complain about link previews not resolving though, so whatever solution, there are going to be some people not happy with it.

If we were to turn off link preview site wide, that’s likely to cause a lot of other issues isn’t it?

Maybe we just put Artist / Title in bold for new releases and no link so people can go search it themselves on whichever platform they use

It looks like the settings let you block link previews (‘onebox’) for specific domains, so it could just be applied to Spotify domains if desired.

As a related irk, the main issue I have with the Spotify embeds is that if I’m scrolling down a page with them in, the scroll gets caught inside the tracklisting in the player and scrolls that instead.

It looks like that’s pretty simple to fix if you can add this to the site’s CSS rules:

iframe[src*="spotify.com"] {
  max-height: 150px;
}

That results in a more compact embed being shown, without the full tracklist

I’m not sure if that would also help with the performance glitches other people are seeing, but it makes the pages more usable for me.

I’m an Apple Music boy but I post Spotify links as I presume most people use Spotify and that there’s probably not much point posting an Apple link for 3 people (I always post a Bandcamp link as well though)

For a while, people used Lynkify, but that stopped a while ago. I think it was buggy, was extra faff to post links and didn’t include as many services as wanted, or something?

Mostly worked fine for me. Occasionally I have to submit the link twice to get it working. The biggest downside about Lynkify is (for some reason) no bandcamp.

We all used Songwhip but then they shut the site down

I haven’t tried Lynkify yet

oh yeah! that’s the one.

No issues on mobile for me (Android), and I am a Spotify user so typically I share a link from there. I theoretically support using Lynkify or something similar (RIP songwhip) but actually it deters me from posting sometimes because I just don’t have the time. Linking from Spotify is convenient because I’m already at the album in Spotify adding it to my own playlist I can just copy the link.

One option would be to enbcourage people to put the links behind a hidden details tag but I don’t know for sure how that would behave:

Summary

Unsupported browser

Doesn’t seem to work

I’m a spotify user, but would definitely prefer this slimmed down preview version - would be great if we could have this set up.

I feel fairly sure I saw someone post a slimmed-down spotify link recently (but not in any of the new releases threads), and I remember liking it, but not sure which thread that was in.

This has been really annoying me too

I hadn’t had any issues with them crashing or not loading properly until yesterday

The 150px fix looks good to me. Sounds like the solution is to try that and if it doesn’t work, turn off previews for Spotify
