It’s the software thread!11

I’ve actually got an Excel question. Who’s the resident office drone that can answer it?

I’m a mainframer so; cobol (believe it or not) and Natural are used on a pretty much daily basis.

DB2

  • DB do
  • DB don’t

I would say most if not all large companies/corporations use Cobol. I know all the big banks do, having worked for Barclays and HBOS.

No-one is teaching these languages etc in universities. The fact you’ve not heard of it is indicative of what may eventually be a huge issue once my generation of developers have retired/died. Who will maintain all the legacy systems, as it’s simply not possible to just re-write them all in C or .Net

“cobol was designed in 1959”!!!

Surprisingly not (thank fuck)

I do remember thinking it was the worst name I’d ever heard for a planet but I guess if you’d never heard of the ancient computer language it may sound quite spacey.

Yeah I think a fair few people made quite a lot of dosh out of y2k. I didn’t however as I was less than a year into a new job with the Halifax and not involved in it at all, ah well maybe I’ll get cryogenically frozen and get myself woken up for y3k!

all jobs are basically the same aren’t they
