Regardless of if you decide tallying up the results is worth it, I’m very interested in seeing people’s lists. If I’m remembering correctly the century poll on the social board ended up being unsurprisingly biased towards 2000-2009 albums and heavily dominated by albums like Is This It, Turn on the Bright Lights, and Funeral. I think we can get a lot of hidden gems out of this.
This is going to be a really tough, interesting exercise. In the past year or so I’ve discovered some all-time classics that I had missed (Deafheaven, Alcest, Mark Kozelek, etc.) and that are exactly my thing, and then there are albums (like Titus Androncus’s The Monitor) which I was absolutely obsessed with but have since lost much of their impact due to feeling like they’re from a different time. I’m not sure how to work that out in a list, but trying will be a nice distraction from everything. At the moment I can’t imagine leaving the three I mentioned out of my top 5.
I think I need to finally give Girl Band a shot. Also I keep forgetting about Icarus Line, I’ve been meaning to give them a serious try for ages. A couple weeks ago I finally watched their movie, I forgot what a great song Solar Plexus is.
I don’t think you will be disappointed with Girl Band. I really should’ve seen the IL movie by now but, as far as I am aware, it’s not on any convenient UK streaming/downloading sites (for me anyway). Love that band, love everything they ever did
Yup, love each section where they ratchet up the intensity, 2:41 when the snare batters in is another. Reckon 5:08 onward is possibly my favourite section of music… ever. The long build and then that throbbing, staggering bass and just all hell breaks loose. Music to walk through walls to
Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I’m definitely very intrigued by this despite it being slightly more abrasive than I’m used to. I’m derailed by the Pumpkins thread today, but I got two listens of How to Hold Hands with Jamie in yesterday and it’s already growing on me quickly. My initial impression is that it’s almost like a nightmare version of the Pixies that replaced Kim Deal with a wall full of malfunctioning car alarms, in a good way. That Paul outro is ridiculous.
I think I’m going to stick with it for awhile before moving onto the next one, it’s probably good to push myself out of my usual zone. I’m excited to get back to it tomorrow now that the thread is winding down.
