it's Marty Scorsese time 🔫 (Director Series)

rolling on from the Coens one, into another modern American great. Seen loads, loved loads, got plenty more I still need to get to or would benefit from a rewatch

(also TIL - always thought it was spelled Scorcese)

15/26 for me, the big missing ones are The Aviator, Boxcar Bertha and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

The Color of Money and Bringing Out the Dead are both probably B-tier, but would love to see given how much I like Newman and Cage and curious to see how they fit into his film worlds

alice doesn’t live here anymore is a great film about what it is like to be trapped in a car with an annoying child

Alice is really good. Taped it off the TV during my initial
Scorsese fever in the early 90s. Doesn’t seem to crop up on TV or streamers anymore

Haven’t see the 1st two, neither were easy to get hold of in the VHS era and I’ve not tried more recently

Never saw Silence or Kundun cos they both seem like they would be boring (sorry Marty)

Worth watching the Hustler if you’ve not seen it before TCOM

that is not a big one, more of an interesting curio. color of money and bringing out the dead are both pretty decent. you should watch the age of innocence as well, that one’s really good

a very overrated director imo

Made the most overrated film of all time, and separately one of the very worst. But he’s also made several absolute bangers. In summary, marty is a land of contrasts

Would you be in the market for a hot ish take that I almost sincerely hold as an opinion?

always

Cape Fear (1991) is the best Martin Scorsese film

Love: Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy

Very good: Mean Streets, After Hours, Raging Bull, The Departed

Decent to good: Cape Fear, Gangs of New York, Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman, KOTFM, Casino

don’t remember anything about Hugo or Shutter Island

would love to see Taxi Driver on a big screen, and looking forward to a King of Comedy rewatch since flatmate has never seen it. Same thing for The Departed, and I’d love a Raging Bull and After Hours rewatch for my own sake - definitely didn’t click fully with Bull on my one watch, and even preferred The Fighter to it (saw them as a double bill)

(in reality it’s raging bull but then Cape Fear and The King of Comedy are the next two in some order thanks)

Really good: Raging Bull, King of Comedy, Cape Fear, Taxi Driver

Be good if he hired a fucking editor: Flower Moon, Irishman

Fine: Departed

Fine if you turn your brain off: Shutter Island

Hugely overrated: Casino, Goodfellas

Awful: Gangs of New York, Wolf of Wall Street
