Got massively hailed on while coming back from taekwondo with the kid earlier, she was on her bike and shouting about how much it hurt but she clarified to me later that because she was smiling she was actually having a great time (reader, I already knew this). Made myself a brilliant/disgusting meal of fries, onion rings, a Co Op vegan burger and some fantastic guacamole I just sorta kinda chucked together. Now I am working, because it is the night and that is what I do.

Think that’s an unfair advantage really.

I honestly reckon that having finally bothered to learn how to make oat milk has improved my daily life by about 10%. That’s how much I’ve got going on, folks.

Yeah, absolutely! It’s rough but it works pretty well.

Get a mug of oats and soak them for at least 30 minutes, longer seems to be better but idk.

Once soaked, drain and wash those oats.

Pop them in a big bowl (if using a hand blender) or food processor with between 500ml and 750ml of water, depending on how thick you want it.

Blend it until smooth/you can’t be bothered anymore (that’s generally when I check out).

Strain through a sieve and tea towel, muslin, or nut bag (haha) - you’re going to have to do some squeezing, it might get a bit messy.

Voila, oat milk! You’re going to need to give it a good old shake before use, but it’s nice in hot drinks/on its own/on cereal etc. You can add salt or sugar if you’re so inclined, but I don’t bother. Better to start with a bit less water, you can always add more if it’s too thick.

The actual hands-on bit takes around 10 minutes at the very most, and that includes time which is me futzing around in my kitchen trying to find stuff so if you’re better organised it could be even quicker.

Oh yeah, I use the little oats, not the big flat oats. Just the Co Op normal ones are fine.

Yeah, I reckon so. I use a hand blender for mine, and the resultant solid is like a very thick cold porridge (yum?) so you could definitely bop it in a smoothie or bake something with it. That’s a really good idea and will stop me wasting so much!

Even just mixing it with some kind of syrup, honey or agave or something, and some dried fruits and nuts and making some simple little oatcakes would be a good shout. I’ll try it next time.

This is interesting because I bought some Oatly recently and couldn’t help noticing that it looks and tastes like what happens when I add water to oats when making porridge. I assumed it couldn’t be that simple but maybe it is?

I’ve been drinking what I described up there for a while now and I can confidently state that it is pretty much like the organic Oatly in flavour and overall texture, but I think it actually holds together a bit better. Like a midpoint between organic and regular blue. Maybe it is that simple and Big Oat is just having us on!

(It also roughs out at about 10p for c.750ml which is absolutely ridonculous)
