I know he’s been gone a long time, but it sounds like he’s back and wants what’s his

In all seriousness, I was very touched by that message and it’s hard to imagine the impact that this could have had on a young artist planning to make their first release. I really hope he is able to release some music in a way that feels right for him, and I’ll look to support that in some way or another.

BTSTU was absolutely incredible.

I’ve got a massive grin on my face this makes up massively missing Primavera.

Anytime anybody has asked me for the last 6 years what’s the one person/band/collective they should listen to I have always said Jai Paul I’ve listened to those leaks nearly every week for the last 6 years

The new song is ace and the new version of the leak even with the samples removed is brilliant.

Very cool of him to officially release the 2013 material, Str8 Outta Mumbai has become one of my favourite ever tracks

What a fascinating/traumatic read. Fuck. I’ve heard so many producers says he’s one of the most influential artists of the last few years - must be galling to make something that’s ripped off from all directions and have it denied an official release for so long.

As he says, hard not to imagine what might have been

So when will the ‘full’ album be released?

Edit: oh shit it’s on Spotify!

Got to be honest if a proper album never gets released I can live with it from what it sounds like to get to this point has been a massive step.

(the version of All Night that’s now been released is so much better without the Tomb Raider sample as is Good Time without that Harry Potter sample)

Still the leak is my album of the decade and I’ll die on a hill saying it.

This is also worth a look it is basically a format that has all the stems for Jasmine and puts them in any order it wants so you never listen to the same version twice. (I think that is how it works)

Can’t stop thinking about this and can’t wait to properly listen/put it in my preferred order. The leaks I’ve had of this have all been in really variable quality so I hope there’s some consistency.

I mainly hope this allows him to take control of the narrative on this album and feel good about it, because an absolute shit load of people are about to fall in love with this man’s music.

I think he was in Terminator: Salvation

Christ. Those people who leaked it, fucking dickheads. I couldn’t imagine the same thing happening to anything I’ve done, the thought of people judging unfinished creative ouptut is a nightmare.

I put off listening to the leak, then forgot about it, because I wanted to wait for the final versions thinking they would come soon after. It’s a shame to not have that final fully realised/mixed release, but I think it’s a really positive move to just put the leaked tracks out there and move on. That’s today’s listening sorted. Already listened to the new single and it’s great obviously.

It’s insane that off the back of 2 singles Jai Paul became what it did. Regardless of whether the new stuff lives up to the hype, I hope this is the start of many more releases, without any further shenanigans.

Top stuff donating to SANE as well!

Love the new singles, love the fact that the leaked album got a proper release. Desperately sad for the guy that his life’s art and his rightful place in the 2010s pop pantheon was robbed from him but it’s uplifting to see him come through it and make great new music.

Bait Ones and the first two singles will be all over end of decade lists, and rightfully so. Welcome back mate.

Wait, this all came from his material being leaked? Hasn’t that happened to loads and loads of artists?

True, but perhaps the combination of hype / it being his first album / they weren’t finished versions makes it worse.

Reminds me of when those shitty demos of the debut Audioslave album came out, though IIRC that was after it looked like the album would never be released.

Bit more complicated than a leaked album. Someone leaked all the sketches of his work as an officially sanctioned piece of work, fooling even his label, and despite XL stating otherwise, it was often presumed he leaked the material himself for publicity. You also have to take into account the type of artist he was, who was clearly a perfectionist and even hesitant about releasing the two songs he did into the world, taking years to do so and labeling them as edits and demos. He was faced with dealing with the leak, and having to motivate himself to complete material that had been widely bootlegged and he could never retrieve control of. Some artists would shake it off but I think it’s easy to see how it could be a traumatic experience.

Easy to forget that this guy was seen as a contemporary of Frank Ocean and The Weeknd at the time, who’ve gone on to be two of the biggest stars in pop music. I’m not convinced Jai ever wanted or would have risen to that level of stardom, but the opportunity that Frank in particular (as another reclusive, perfectionist sort) had to carefully construct his career was taken from Jai

Listened to this for the first time today and even in the demo format it sounds really good. Fuck those guys who leaked it - a fully-realised version could have been incredible.

Been listening to this non-stop. When that vocal sample comes in at the end of Str8 Outta Mumbai it is fucking mind blowing.

There were strong rumours flying all over the place at the beginning of 2013 that it was the next single with a summer time drop.

Pretty convinced now that if it had come out it would have stopped Climate Change.

Been rinsing the album - Mumbai is so unbelievably cool.

Has anyone had problems getting into the Paul Institute site?

I can’t get them to send me a password?
