It was also hampered by the lead single (I Know What I’m Here For) being terrible. Probably the only song by them that I actively dislike.
That said, it still reached number 2 in the UK charts, their best chart placing since Laid. So it can’t have been that badly received.
Pleased To Meet You was probably the better album, but that did next to nothing and then they disappeared for seven years
You’re right, it sounded really dated and it sounds out of place on the album.

Yep, I Know What I’m Here For is the one I always grit my teeth through when I listen to millionaires! Pleased To Meet You has some great stuff, Space and Getting Away With It in particular for me, but also a few I didn’t click with.
If I could only listen to 50 songs ever again in my life, I’d probably have Say Something on the list.
Considering the union of Eno and James yielded Laid and Wah Wah, it is kinda confounding that Whiplash and Millionaires were so comparatively bleahhhhhh (some high points but none of the skyscraping brilliance).
Pleased To Meet You is prob my #3 or 4 fave James album tbh (it’s surely Laid, Wah Wah, and Seven up there).
