James!

This album soundtracked sixth form for me. There isn’t a song on it that doesn’t stir up some adolescent emotion, totally incapable of listening objectively. We’re Going To Miss You in particular still sends shivers down my spine, Fred Astaire is the sound of my first serious relationship. Just a wonderful, wonderful album. With a pig on the cover.

Although The Smiths in 1985 were the first gig I ever went to, technically the first band I ever saw live were James as they were the support band. I’d seen them the previous week on The Old Grey Whistle Test and they’d just released Hymn From A Village. For this reason I’ve always had a soft spot for them. I have no time for their Manchester lump in thing or Sit Down but they do have some great tracks.

I love the chord progression and pull in Runaground.
