This is the only ceremony I would ever care about:

i think the film was made after The Rock came across this on TV while in England and he contacted Smerch

I rewatched it over Xmas with my parents who both quite enjoyed it as an easy going film. It has its moments but I still struggle a bit with how certain bits are presented, (especially the end) but that’s just my issue by being far too close to the original story.

Agree.

But these nominations are the result of polling amongst BAFTA voters and are not the work of a single person or committee.
If the latter were true they’d fix the categories to be properly diverse. By simply tallying up the BAFTA hivemind they get a default blandness akin to Ed Sheeran dominating a pop chart based on sales.
BAFTA should ignore the membership at the nomination stage and give them a choice of selected candidates. Although I suspect that any process that involves voting will default to a safe winner.

Yeah the Bafta CEO seemed a bit embarrassed with how the noms turned out. But ultimately it’s up to them to keep their organisation relevant and ensure their awards reflect a wider range of audience and not just predictable Hollywood churn (but maybe that’s what they want as it’s where the money and column inches are :man_shrugging: I mean why have people saying ā€œCynthia Erivo who?ā€ when you can have two Margot Robbies).

Don’t quite understand the extreme reactions to Jojo Rabbit. Just a nice, fun, occasionally poignant, coming of age fable. Like Boy in the Striped Pyjamas but with more jokes.

Yeah I didn’t love it or anything but it has some funny bits and good acting. Some reviews have acted like Taika Waititi went around Auschwitz taking selfies or something

Think I’m just going to give up on following internet film discourse now. The same thing happened with Joker (despite saying ā€œFuck off Jokerā€ upthread I actually quite enjoyed it).

some solid advice for us all here

Director’s Guild nominees: Scorsese, Tarantino, Bong Joon Ho, Mendes, Waititi

Those first four seem dead certs for Oscar nominations, and then it’ll be either Waititi or Todd Phillips or Noah Baumbach most likely (or maybe Pedro Almodovar, but much less likely). I think Greta Gerwig’s chances are done alas, ditto Lulu Wang :frowning:

Here comes A Rainy Day in New York, my 52nd Woody Allen film, and at least the 27th to have this exact plot and characters.

This is why all the other old directors get other people to write their films

Just watched The Two Popes, really enjoyed it. Pryce and Hopkins are both on fucking great form, could have watched them all night. Genuinely tender in places and i loved the last scene with them watching the football.

It’s a nice film. Shows how good Hopkins can be when he’s arsed.

When Hopkins properly shows up i can think of few who can even come close.
