About 2/3 through the goldfinch.

I truly don’t think this is as bad as the reviews had led me to believe. Forgetting a lot of the book probably helps too

so this was… something

I’d seen and loved Santa Sangre before, so it’s not like I was unprepared. I just think a lot of the transgressive stuff made me uncomfortable.

also, a lot of it was just daft, really.

dunno/10

It just follows so closely to the book, that if you know the book it adds nothing, just recreates scenes from it, but if you don’t know it, it leaves too much out

It ends up a nothing film

god I miss grouchland

will do tomorrow pal

Pleasantly surprised to see my local Odeon is playing Waves.

Fair bit to see this week between Waves, Bombshell, Just Mercy and trying to get Uncut Gems in a 2nd time.

Weathering With You and Bad Boys for Life out as well. That is a big week.

Wish they’d evened it out a bit more, there’s virtually nothing out next weekend

1917 - Surprisingly impressed with this. Was expecting a technical achievement that was boring but got a technical achievement way beyond what I anticipated that wasn’t boring instead. Roger Deakins is a fucking genius, man. This hits all the narrative tropes that are so dull in war films ordinarily but the difference here is that the composition and the inherent sense of the journey that is delivered by the execution actually imbued these tropes with the emotional clout that they usually lack for me. The frame-within-a-frame slowly being removed to bring some sense of relief or catharsis was executed several times and really landed for me. I think this is a good film and I wasn’t expecting that.

Absolutely baffled by this observation of JoJo Rabbit. It’s wonderful.

Not to sound like every dork on the internet but Parasite is really bloody good indeed. I have so many thoughts I’m not sure where to begin, might wait until the rest of you have seen it.

Seeing Weathering With You tonight. Really looking forward to it.

I never actually got round to seeing Your Name so will likely watch that over the weekend too if I like this one.

Your Name is amazing, or at least it is if you’re a bit of a sap like me

Seeing Weathering With You tomorrow

Cineworld have an unlimited screening of WWY on the 30th but I didn’t find this out until after I’d booked a train at the exact time it’s on :unamused:

Dunno whether to leave it in case they have more screenings (they had Your Name on a lot) or to just stump up and see it at the local Vue this weekend…

Edit: never mind, it’s on in Edinburgh now, and after my train gets in, so I can see it there!!!

Feel like more of the film thread have seen it than haven’t tbh (spoken with immense jealousy as part of the “haven’t seen it” crew)

Saw Waves tonight - don’t think I’ve seen something as in-your-face-gut-punchy since Requiem for a Dream. It’s really stuck with me since leaving the cinema. The only slightly off-putting thing was my entire music collection being used for the soundtrack, which almost took me out of the zone at times.
