Oh excellent! That’s my favourite film of all time

Kandahar is a really powerful watch whilst Gabbeh is a lovely bit of magic realism. The Cyclist is also one of my favourites, but I think he’s a director who covers so much and incorporates different elements to his works that people will get different things out of each film.

I’d also check out Close-Up which is a fascinating work. He doesn’t direct it but it tells the true story, complete with real life footage of the subsequent trial, of a man who impersonated Makhmalbaf and got into a families life, even promising them they would be in his new film. The film then reconstructs how exactly he did this, using the real man on trial and real family

Thanks for the Makhmalbaf tips, i’ll check those out. Salaam Cinema sounds right up my street too.

Close-Up is a favourite of mine, but I never got round to watching Makhmalbaf films. I don’t think there was a finer run in the 90s than Kiarostami. Close-Up, The Wind Will Carry Us, Life and Nothing More and Taste of Cherry are all kinds of perfect. I had Moment of Innocence on my watchlist for ages but needed Mubi putting The Silence up to remind me. Will try and watch that today.

I’ve not seen Salaam Cinema, will try to do the same!

I have a Kiarostami box set but only watched a couple from it (mainly as I rarely watch DVDs now) but I find films from Iranian directors so rich and unique. I need to sign up for the streaming service, which I forget the name of

For the next month:

Watched is yesterday oddly enough. My review from Letterboxd: “Enthralling, fascinating and perfectly replicates what I feel that exhaustive work would’ve been like. Hoffman and Redford really get across the frenzy and paranoia of the story in such a naturalistic way. Amazing editing!”

Watched The Game (1997) - That there is a fuckin’ mad film. Fair play.

Truly like to watch Michael Douglas losing the plot and a Fincher twisty turny time
