Just hit 60 films/shorts/docs this month! Sure i’ve had full years in the past without watching that many.
The Terminator
Only grew up with Judgement Day recorded off TV and somehow only watching this for the first time 20ish years later. The premise is great with the execution really living upto it and manages to strike the right balance of 80’s charm, kitschiness and gore. One of those occasions where you can see that every single dollar has been spent about the best it can be are and where Arnie’s potential weaknesses are used as his strengths. T2 is the better film, but this does a great job putting the pieces on the board. 3.5/5
His Girl Friday
Printing lies for political gain? I thought this was made in 1940 not 2020 boom boom… Watched a few Cary Grant films in the past 3 weeks and his sleazy charm, quick wit and uber scampishness ooze the absolute most here. Really felt like Hughes kept the pure essence of the play and just let the camera roll, leaving in the natural quirks, over talking and prop flubs that normal life has. That choice paired with a script so rapid it would make Aaron Sorkin weep make for such a fun blitz of a film. Russell’s early character sadly gets sold out at the end and Grant gets exactly what he set out for. 3.5/5
Oblivion
More of an observation than a knock, but this is something that would probably go straight to Netflix these days. It puts a few decent sci-fi pieces that you’ve seen / read before into a blender with solid enough execution. A good 20 mins too long with everything being fine and seemingly afraid to tread on any fresh ground. 2.5/5
