Said it at the time, but given his decline, giving De Gea a 350k a week contract was mental. Really not sure the extra 1 percent he might give us over Romero or Henderson is worth an extra 300k a week, and given the likes of Real were no longer interested, I think he’d have eventually signed a contract for far less money.

Quite like De Gea. Should and could have gone elsewhere several times but stayed. Never really kicked off or done much off the pitch, just gets on with his job. Think it’s weird that people think he’s a lucky goalkeeper as well rather than just having superior positioning and natural smarts.

Find it absolutely ludicrous that anyone anywhere has ever described him as the best goalkeeper in the world however. To compare him to Oblak or Ter Stegen or Alisson, or before that Neuer, for me, is potty. I’d struggle to find a place for him in the top ten or fifteen. He’s never had the all-round game of a world class goalkeeper, and it feels a bit like the game’s moved on and left him behind.

Presumably it’s a light runaround for match fitness more than anything. Basically a training/reserve match at this point

Think this bit is key really. During his first few seasons at Old Trafford he really was one of the best young goalies around, but that was just as the position was seriously evolving and being a brilliant shot stopper/area commander was no longer enough. He was somewhat unfortunate to move there before he had the opportunity to work with someone who could have progressed the passing/tactical side of his game (not so unfortunate he’s somewhere where he can basically dictate his salary, but hey).
