Jason Isbell (UK tour in November)

I’m fairly certain I haven’t been to a concert since 2008 through a combination of not keeping up with new music, anxiety and sensory overload.

Only just found out Jason Isbell is going to be in my (very random) neck of the woods in November so that 16 year concertless window is soon to close

Anyone else going? Dates below.

Going to use this thread over the next few weeks to unload the 600 Jason Isbell posts I’ve had in my mind over the past few years but never posted.

Going to Edinburgh leg. Fully expect it to be fucking brilliant.

Didn’t know about this and pretty gobsmacked at the venue sizes…… is he that much of a big deal here? Loved his stuff with the truckers but admittedly checked out on the solo stuff.

Haven’t seen him before so I’m tempted. My issue is that Southeastern is basically perfect and all his other records hover around a 7/10 for me so I’d really want the gig to focus on that era which he is (understandably) not going to do.

I actually think his most recent one surpasses Southeastern for me. But Southeastern is a classic, no doubt.

Also going to the Edinburgh show. I saw him at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in 2022 and that was one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen.

Hmm this is getting tempting…

That Metallica cover is an odd choice right?

The setlist there is from 2022 - would expect this to be predominantly Weathervanes (which is good for me because it’s probably my second favourite swim after Southeastern) with a few others.

Have you listened to Weathervanes? It’s not the most similar musically to Southeastern, but it feels the most spiritually similar to me somehow.

I have listened but probably not enough after Reunions and The Nashville Sound did’t hit the way I wanted. I’ll go back to it though!

He recorded it for Metallica’s massive Backlist covers box set - it’s absolutely fantastic!

Fun fact - my partner and I were jetlagged as all hell and left before the encore because we were both almost falling asleep…

I was really into him around the time of Southeastern. Loved that and Something More Than Free. Saw him in 2016 - almost perfect setlist covering those two albums plus a few Truckers covers - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Concert Setlist at O2 Forum Kentish Town, London on January 22, 2016 | setlist.fm. Brilliant gig. Although how you can write a song a phenomenally good as Goddam Lonely Love and leave it off a setlist is beyond me.

Haven’t really followed him since, but not for any particular reason, so this thread has prompted me to pick up listening again. Sounds like the new album is worth a spin, so I’ll give that one a go.

That Sad But True cover is also surprisingly good!

Edit: support at the gig was John Moreland, who I’d never heard of, but totally blew me away. Went to see him headline the Union Chapel a little later as a result.

Oops, completely forgot about this thread :man_facepalming:

@shinymcshine how was Edinburgh?

Ah, just seen your post on the gig thread. Sounds like a bit of a weird one. I’m a bit nervous about Stockton given it’s such a strange place to hold one - kind of suspect it to be half full at best, but that might be better than drunk people singing.

brighton wasn’t that full at all but i had a great time and thought the band were good, if a bit cheesy. the guitarist looks like boone from lost.

Going to hammermsith now

Worth looking on showfilmfirst if youre a fan…

I was also at the Edinburgh gig and absolutely loved it. Was seated upstairs in the grand circle where I thought the sound was really good, and I probably have more tolerance for the extended solos than most. Cried (again) at If We Were Vampires because that seems to be a thing I do now.

Also, silly question, but as someone who hasn’t been to a show in over a decade, what time are you supposed to turn up to these things. Doors are 6:30 and it seems from the set list site that it’s normally about two hours after doors they start? Was it one support act?

In Edinburgh it was doors at 7, S.G Goodman at 7:45 and Jason Isbell at 8:45. Finished up around 10:45. I really liked S.G. Goodman, would definitely get there in time for her set.
