Jason Molina

This does too

I get what you mean but I really like it. Don’t think it strays into being a rip off even if it’s got a very similar palette, and the songwriting is really strong throughout.

Love this in particular;

An old tour-only release is back (although I see it’s on streaming) and on vinyl for the first time ever apparently

Saw this on the daily mail-out from Norman and by the time I’d clicked it they were sold out :frowning:

Really hoping they’ll consider pressing up a few more: demand must have been through the roof.

Looks like you can still order it from the label on the link above

(My normal record shop had also sold out by 7pm after sending the email about it at 6)

Guess what they tried to flog me as an add-on :smiling_face_with_tear:

Lol at the ubiquity of that BE record but if you don’t already have 8 Gates, that’s an absolute STEAL at that price.

Yes! Thank you so much (totally missed the original link…)

Now ordered.

Now waiting until October the 25th for release…

I’ve never heard it!

It’s a very short record of songs recorded (and then lost) when he was in London I think. It’s only about 26 mins but contains at least one essential track. Would snap it up at that price.

I really love that record and the whole story around it :blue_heart:

So I finally got my hands on this on Friday and I’m really enjoying it

It claims that all the songs are improvised live which is just absolutely mind blowing (I imagine he must have had at least a rough idea about some lyrics and maybe a key for the band to follow him in to begin with otherwise I simply cannot fathom how anyone would create this spontaneously).

They sound like ‘real songs’ with lyrics etc rather than what I thought I might be getting: instrumental freak outs/break downs or whatever. They’re definitely on the looser/less focused end of Molina’s output but there’s still plenty to enjoy regardless. I’ve often said that he’s got I’ve of those voices where I’d happily listen to him sing almost anything and his vocals are just as yearning and vulnerable here as on any Songs Ohia record.

Is it essential? No. Would it make top five JM releases? Definitely not. Is it worth listening to/owning? Absolutely.

What would they be, out of interest?

Ooooooo… Now you’re asking!

Probably be fairly predictable (Lioness and Electric Company would definitely be in there) but I don’t actually have a list.

I do however have a day off for half term and no competition for the turntable currently. I think this sounds like a project…

This bops.

Information snagged from the Keeled Scales mail out.

Will Johnson and the remaining members of beloved band Magnolia Electric Co. have joined forces for new recordings as Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co.

In September, Magnolia and Johnson Electric Co. will pay tribute to their work with the late Jason Molina and perform four shows in Texas, September 18-21, 2025.

Today they share a roaring version of The Big Beast and announce a seven-inch record out in September.

On September 19th they’ll release the two-song 7" record “Wooden Heart” / “Twenty Cycles To The Ground,” which are full band recordings of two of the songs from the Molina and Johnson album.

I’m usually completely un-arsed about tribute albums, but this has definitely turned my head.

MJs rendition isnt the best imho. Its a young mans perspective.
