For me, it’s very hard to adequately express the emotions this stuff brings up, so a bit of levity can help - you read what I posted when I first found out, and none of that anger and utter despair has gone anywhere. It’s human to make light of horrible things, it’s a coping mechanism. I liked @anon16531887’s post because I agree with the sentiment broadly, but I don’t actually think you’re off the mark.

On average two inmates a week kill themselves in UK prisons. I’d hardly call that ‘relatively rare’.

Haven’t followed this thread, don’t really know who this Epstein guy is, but if an inmate wants to kill themselves, whether they’re on suicide watch or not, they’ll find a way. Don’t buy into conspiracy theories.

Not really either backing up nor trying to tear you down here, but just for stats purposes - UK prison population is 0.13% of the national population. Approximately 5800 people committed suicide in the UK in 2017. If two people a week kill themselves in prison that’s 104 deaths, or 0.17% of the national suicide total. So, a slightly higher rate than in the general population, but not by much. I don’t want to buy into conspiracy theories, I really don’t. It makes me feel a crushing sense of despair. But at the same time, I’m not sure I can necessarily take things at face value, however much I would like to.

The comments I read said it’s rare in federal facilities compared to jails (my sloppy wording), and that it usual happens when a person is about to be apprehended, that chimes with my perception, it’s when it’s all come crashing down and the person has become exposed, he has been exposed for awhile.

As for conspiracy theory, take each one on its merit, this whole case was a conspiracy theory once

Anyway yeah I too don’t know so much about all this Epstein shit because really it takes a lot out of me whenever I learn about it and I’ve been expecting it to be quietly swept under the rug for a while now but fucking hell this is brazen. Like I was expecting some money to grease palms, trial goes ahead finding that all his crimes were entirely private and nobody else is implicated at all no sir and then he quietly bites it from a “heart attack” or some shit a few months after. If you’re going to be this obvious about it then you may as well not even bother to call it anything but a hit or hide your goddamn pedo ring.

True, if prison suicide rates are contrasted against non-prison suicide rates, it’s slightly lower, but, if we’re going on 2017 stats, prison suicide rates are running at a record high -

Suicides happen, whether inmates are on suicide watch or not.

Didn’t both Harold Shipman and Fred West kill themselves while on suicide watch?

Absolutely, I’m not doubting that at all - like I said, I was just working it out for stats purposes, and like you say, it definitely does happen regardless of circumstance. Not seeking to rip you down or anything like that whatsoever.
