Her previous records appealed because the experimental stuff was tied to catchy melodies (not always simple ones, but there was usually a pop element there somewhere). That’s less obvious on this record, it’s more the kind of album I need to be in the mood for rather than one that gets under my skin and I have to listen to again and again. I get the feeling it’s a record she had to make at this point, it’s expansive, pushes her into different territories, and hopefully it leads her down new and interesting paths in future.
I think some of these songs will definitely be really good live. Can’t wait!
