Over at Philosophy of the World podcast, we’re a bit conflicted about Julia Holter’s latest record, Aviary. It’s certainly an incredible artistic accomplishment and unparalleled work in sound design. However, it’s also monstrous in length and depth making it pretty difficult to fully digest in whole. Also makes it relatively unique in an era of streaming music and singles. Is this Holter’s greatest accomplishment? What do you all think about this record?

Her previous records appealed because the experimental stuff was tied to catchy melodies (not always simple ones, but there was usually a pop element there somewhere). That’s less obvious on this record, it’s more the kind of album I need to be in the mood for rather than one that gets under my skin and I have to listen to again and again. I get the feeling it’s a record she had to make at this point, it’s expansive, pushes her into different territories, and hopefully it leads her down new and interesting paths in future.

I think some of these songs will definitely be really good live. Can’t wait!
