Watched a couple films with pretty great Dads yesterday: Call Me By Your Name and Hereditary. Everyone on the planet’s seen them already so I’ve got nothing to add but they’re both sublime.

Hard to see past Mission Impossible for July’s film of the month. Might watch the previous five in advance to get me pumped.

I mean I can’t imagine bothering with a sequel to Sicario that chucks out everything that made the first film slightly more interesting than the usual pretentious cops & robbers schtick. And of course without the great Jóhann Jóhannsson to score it

Basically my feelings on reading

In September 2015, Lionsgate commissioned a sequel to Sicario , centering on Benicio del Toro’s character.

back my reaction was just why him? and it sounds like that was justified.

Scarlett Johansson has picked up some flak for agreeing to play this guy:

Given he looks like Oliver Platt I can only assume they’re not going for accuracy in any case, but citing actors who’ve played trans roles in the past seems pretty shitty to justify doing so in the future.

Going to see it tonight I think - excited!

i think a lot will hinge if you like it on something but saying anything will ruin it for you!

What I want to know is who keeps employing the director of Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost in the Shell

Is there a general film discussion thread anymore? One not specific to this month?

nope

you can use this to discuss older stuff tho

Saw 2001 at the imax last night. Never really appreciated how great it is before (think I was about 15 when I last watched it), it’s a true masterpiece and has gone into my all-time top 10.

Ok wasn’t sure!

Just got around to watching Terence Malick’s ‘Song to Song’ - such a steaming pile of poop

I am usually supportive of his style and vision - but this took style over substance to the extreme. Every character was either completely annoying or under utilised. Huge cast that was hardly used! The way everyone was flopping around, or crawling, or rubbing their face on another, or dancing to some imaginary tune - fuck!!

I think I’ve had my fill of Malick now

Leave No Trace - Really impressed by this. Two absolutely stunning central performances and a real subtlety to the whole thing. Found the-kindness-of-strangers aspects really emotionally affecting as well. Debra Granik is great.

I need to rewatch this akshually

watched Manhunter last night - never seen it before - kind of amazed it got bad reviews on release - is it fair to say it was ahead of its time? really grisly and has some great more abstract parts towards the end, maybe people were just expecting a straight up crime film.

Hereditary has a nice slow build, a beyond tediois middle act and a good ending, even though its almost identical to Kill List

not at all scary though. baaically Insidious or The Conjuring or something with good actors
