Genuinely didn’t know Manhunter existed before Red Dragon came out tbh. Having Hopkins in it / finishing of that trilogy was a big draw.

RD doesn’t offer anything particularly/at all new but it’s glossy and has a good cast

above everything i seem to recall them absolutely screwing the ending which is definitely the weakest bit of manhunter

Ah nice one, cheers. Yeah, I had the director’s cut in that case. The visual quality of those scenes is so jarring, it’s very odd.

Watched Hausu yesterday

Cult Japanese film about a group of schoolgirls who go to visit one of their mysterious aunts houses

Beautifully deranged film that veers from pop psychedelia to haunted house movie

There are more visual ideas in 10 seconds of this film than most films manage in 90 minutes

Great film, hilariously batshit. And it has a sweet cat.

Worth a watch? I was debating this or Female Prisoner last night but thought House looked too wacky and a bit annoying

I thought it was a wonderful homage to the last golden age of Hollywood. Beautiful production, excellent performances and a fine script. I’m also a sucker for the Coens referencing their past work - Barton Fink wrote for Capitol Pictures.

For me it’s top three with Fargo and Miller’s Crossing. It’s almost perfect. It’s their most personal film, for obvious reasons.

Love the deliberate mistake of Santana’s Abraxas too.

I watched Selma today. I can’t think about it too much without welling up. It’s currently on Mubi, highly recommend it.

Yes definitely

It is wacky but some absolutely amazing visuals

Why

Because HBO are great?

The Green Ray (1986)
Hmm, didn’t particularly care for this. Think the idea was a bit laboured and consequently it just felt a bit boring and not very effective. Anyone know what the deal with the ‘comedies et proverbs’ is? Not sure I quite get it. Noticed lately that I find it quite irritating when films have chapter headings or timestamps. Never see the point of them and always find that they cheapen things.

Tried watching Monos on Netflix last night and sacked it off half way through. The only English subtitles are hard-of-hearing ones that come with ludicrously overzealous audio description. Even if I was deaf, I don’t think I’d need a sudden massive fireball to be captioned with [explosion]. Also ruined Mica Levi’s score to have every note of it accompanied by [ominous music] or [foreboding music]. It’s a film about child soldiers, it’s not gonna be [bubblegum pop music] now is it

gonna watch Eyes Wide Shut for either the third or fourth time tonight. Have found it gets better with each viewing so far so this could be the one. What you saying about it, DiS?

  • peak Kubrick
  • not peak but decent
  • kinda average or don’t really get it
  • quite bad, something about the soundtrack
