Da 5 Bloods is kinda masterful really, loved every second

Watched Pleasantville last night. It was ā€œpretty goodā€ in my opinion but I’m fairly sure it doesn’t exist. Paul Walker was very fun in it.

GIRLHOOD IS ON MUBI

Yeah maybe just the beer that put me in an especially good mood, but I couldn’t see any of the issues people raised above. I enjoyed basically every story strand, felt engaged the whole time and never felt it was too long. With 45 mins left I did think it would outstay its welcome, but then that part was just as engrossing as the rest so it flew by.

Loved the device of having the actors unaged in the flashbacks, not sure I’ve seen that before, and it really worked well here given all the themes of ageing and memory and how much it made them contrast to Norm and their picture of him.

The last third was a different approach but I think it stuck true to telling them story he started with and carrying through those emotions even with all the gunfights and death. Big fan, every new Spike film I see just makes me more of a fan

Just saw Lynn and Lucy.

Very good film. I won’t give away anything regarding plot. If you like Ken Loach and/or 60s kitchen sink dramas you’ll like this. 8/10 from me.

Same here. Very good indeed, particularly Roxanne Scrimshaw.

Keep away from the Kermode review in the Guardian/Observer, as uncharacteristically, he gives away the whole damn movie.

The Straight Story

This was really sweet and moving, funny to imagine David Lynch doing a U-rated film for Disney

Shame (re-watch)

The Michael Fassbender/Carey Mulligan stuff was much better than the Michael Fassbender goes around sleeping with random women stuff. I haven’t seen Hunger yet but for now I’ll assume this is the weakest Steve McQueen film

Hunger is his best one(not seen his most recent one)

The fact that it’s still legit Lynchian despite showing a totally different side to the idea of Lynchian is so good. Should watch it again someday

Was thinking briefly about watching Shame bc although a film about a sex addict is unlikely to register that strong with me (based on premise alone at least), it would possibly fit as my 69th lockdown film

Yeah like I say there’s two films in there, and one is a lot better than the other - it’s OK, the two leads are both great anyway unsurprisingly

Hunger>12 Years A Slave>>>>>>>>>Widows=Shame

Such a good film. Mad to think it’s early Crowe, he put on 40lbs for it then went straight into Gladiator (which I watched again on Friday, Crowe fully earned that Oscar)

Watched three films yesterday.

Dead Poet’s Society - Not very good really. Robin Williams is great but I didn’t care about any of the boys and their motivations and interests seemed to rotate amongst the group which made it hard to land with any of them. As a general rule ā€œposh boarding schoolā€ is not a location that is conducive to me enjoying a work of fiction.

Good Will Hunting - Funny to watch two old ā€œRobin Williams inspires a/some kidsā€ films back to back for some reason. This was a box ticking exercise as I hadn’t seen it before and it was aggressively fine. It’s weird and funny to think that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were gifted and exciting young screenwriters eh.

Almost Famous - Kind of boring but also really engaging at the same time. Didn’t/don’t give a shit about the era/themes in terms of ā€œRock ā€˜n’ Roll on tour!ā€ or whatever but Cameron Crowe is such a humane director that it works despite that. Some fucking awful manic-pixie-dream-girl shit going on in it but it feels more acceptable in the heightened world the film operates in. Billy Crudup is fucking great in this eh.

Didn’t really rate hereditary
Thought it was a bit scattergun and became a bit of a mess in the last half hour. Also when a film is obviously a very silly concept it should lean into that a bit rather than being so incredibly po faced

Frances McDormand and Philip Seymour Hoffman are both great in Almost Famous too

Yeah, Frances McDormand in particular (not one of my favourite PSH performances tbh), she is absolutely heartbreaking
