Rewatched Attack the Block last night. Haven’t seen it since the cinema and it is much, much better than I remember. For some reason I thought it was slight but there’s obviously so much going on beneath the kids vs aliens plot. Kinda curious how private-school boy Joe Cornish managed to write it. It seems quite authentic, although I have never really lived in London so :man_shrugging:

Also watched Queen & Slim, which is quite an engrossing watch although far from perfect. Felt too rushed at the start and didn’t give me time to understand the characters and their relationship, but it did mean that, with the entire film spent on the run, you really got a sense of how big their journey was. Could have done without Flea popping up as the sympathetic white man though

Cornish posted on IG that he’s in talks with Boyega to write a sequel… cautiously intrigued.

Yeah! That’s what prompted the rewatch, could work :crossed_fingers:

I feel like I read somewhere that he worked quite closely with the actors and tried to cast the young actors from local state schools – not sure if that is the case, but that attention is definitely present in there from what I remember.

Fancy re-watching it myself actually

He also grew up in south London - obviously he wasn’t living in a tower block but still an area he was familiar with

Just remembered the bit in Adam Buxton’s book where he talks about how much of Joe’s bedroom decor was film posters stolen from Underground stations

You Don’t Nomi - a documentary about the classic film Showgirls and it’s legacy, taking into account Paul Verhoeven’s other films. I thought this was great, though it helps that I’m a massive Showgirls fan. If you’re interested in the stuff surrounding the film but not the film itself, you’ll still get something out of it.

where did you watch this please and thankyou?

Cinema Paradiso have sent me Pasolini’s Salo this week… erm… has anyone seen it?

Bought it on iTunes for a tenner (no option to rent). Had a look on streaming and in… other places but failed to find it!

Ah shame, would be interested to see it but not £10 interested

Aye it’s great. Recommended that you pair it with dinner. Ideally chilli nachos.

(I don’t think it’s as distressing as made out to be. It’s a very interesting film with some cool ideas. But the vibe is unpleasant and poop is involved, so yeah fair dos if that’s not anyone’s bag)

It’s okay - when I’m the director a TV channel (just waiting for the call) I’ll screen Showgirls followed by Showgirls documentaries and stage production until the end of time.

Yes. Not an easy watch and for my money not a particularly good film either.

I saw it at the BFI and found it largely boring tbh. Lots of poo.

Aw maan. If you went to the movies as a teen in the late 80s/early 90s then hoo boy you saw a fuck ton of Joel’s movies. I liked a lot of them; Flatliners, Falling Down, The Lost Boys…

Not sure if he wrote it but this is my favourite all time film poster tagline
