It’s actually a lot less abrasive than people say, I found it quite elegant tbh

That’s a shame, loved lost boys when I was young and falling down is excellent.

No but she’s mentioned quite a bit in that Women Make Film doc

Speaking of which…anyone been watching this? Watched the first 4 parts and enjoyed it, had a kind of hypnotic quality

Lots of people I kniw and a few to check out (Ida Lupino, Kira Muratova, Mai Zetterling, Lotte Reiniger)

Hmmmm

Watched it a couple days ago and was marvelling at how his career trajectory could go so awry. Lost Boys is actually a quality horror film. Thought it would’ve aged dreadfully.

Yeah. It’s great. I’ll be starting the last part tomorrow.

There’s so many directors that I never have heard of. I’ve really enjoyed watching it in small chunks. They split each episode into maybe six or seven bits and they’re perfect bite size bits of TV to watch with a cup of tea (for me anyway).

I’ve seen two Ida Lupino films; The Hitchhiker and The Bigamist. Both are terrific. Not sure which to recommend to you first. Watch both!

Have you never seen it?

Nope. I’ve been slowly working through Verhoeven’s though so I feel like I’ll be in a decent position to get on its wavelength

Cant wait for your review. Am firmly in the “its actually a work of art” camp.

Had Falling Down on my to-watch list for about 5 years, might finally tick it off

I think they’re both on Mubi so will check them out

There was an amazing shot in the Hitchhiker so looking forward to seeing it

I think one drawback of the series is that I reckon a lot of the films will be difficult to find

I do find it funny that there’s a very good, comprehensive doc on women film makers that’s barely got any mention on here and yet there are now TWO huge Star Wars threads, as if the first one wasn’t enough

Is the shot the one in the car when a bank robberys happening? Really well done that

Ah I think it’s another one…where the criminal is in silhouette in the backseat and then emerges from the darkness

Thought it was brilliant

Well… Good grief.

I think I love it? I did up until that last section to be sure, it tipped over into the kind of problems I had with Elle after that tbh. I kind of don’t see how anyone at any point takes it as a face value “bad film” given Verhoeven’s other work though. It’s so evidently satirical and sarcastic and scathing. You can hate it for those reasons but to deny the intent and just write it off as gratuitous or vulgar or trashy or whatever seems wilfully ignorant to me.

I guess I probably prefer what he did after with Starship Troopers and think that’s probably a better execution of a similar type of thing he was going for with Showgirls but it’s a properly fascinating film and I’m excited to dive into that documentary.

Some truly unbelievable dialogue throughout as well, “I used to love Doggy Chow too!” “It must be weird not having anybody cum on you” “One day she looks like Pollyanna, the next day she looks like… Lolita maybe?”

Watched The Hitch-Hiker tonight, some beautiful shots but unfortunately did not find myself that enthralled, wish Myers had been more threatening tbh.

Will watch The Bigamist tomorrow.

Turns out Im thinking of Gun Crazy, which isnt a Lupino film

I think showgirls “failed” compared to his other films in his “US” period because the others all work when taken at face value - big, trashy thrillers and/ or sci fi. Whereas showgirls only really works if you understand it’s satire

Yeah, I was really interested reading the premise and being quite a fan of noir – but it didn’t quite live up to the version I’d imagined in my mind. I’m hoping to watch The Bigamist this week or soonish, look forward to hearing what you think

Yeah, that’s a good point actually. Very easy to miss the point with RoboCop I guess but it still works as a piece of entertainment despite that. Starship Troopers was post-Showgirls, right? I reckon your point probably applies to that as well. Need to see Hollow Man now I guess…
